Simon Harris, who appointed himself Minister for Finance earlier this year, has never had a job of any kind outside of politics. He has zero academic qualifications beyond his leaving cert. He started two different college courses but dropped out twice. He has never been self-employed. Never started a business, never created a job, never had to worry about covering payroll or paid a penny in VAT. Now he runs our economy. But how does that happen? Simon is in the job he's in because he's exceptionally good at playing politics. He managed to climb the Fine Gael ladder all the way to the top. But it would leave you wondering - is there any other job in which a person's complete lack of any relevant education, skills, training, work experience or track record would be set aside? Simon was democratically elected so he is entitled to be where he is. But is Ireland really best served by giving top jobs to people with no knowledge of what they're doing? The upcoming budget will be a great example. Simon will use our money to buy votes for those from traditional Fine Gael income brackets - and absolutely stick the boot into those who come from areas, social backgrounds and age brackets from whom he has nothing to gain. Decisions won't be made on the basis of what's best for the people of Ireland. We've a pure politician in charge. Simon will make decisions on the basis of what's best for Simon.

Apparently, the asylum file came with a plot twist: allegations of a false claim, a very timely pregnancy, and a whole lot of questions about Ireland’s immigration and citizenship system. And now there are claims of racial abuse. Apparently, the race card is the emergency exit whenever awkward questions about integrity appear. But integrity doesn’t have a skin colour. If the allegations are true, then this isn’t about race - it’s about honesty, accountability and whether the same standards apply to everyone. Perhaps put the race card back in the deck and answer the questions.

What I don't understand here is that the Government prevents landlords from increasing residential rent at anything above 2% (or the rate of general inflation) annually. A typical 1,000 litre fill of home heating oil was €600 five years ago. That same tank will now cost over €1,600. For many in rural areas, the elderly in particular, a warm home is now an unaffordable luxury. In times like these people in rural Ireland had back up - you could buy cheap local turf from a neighbour or small scale supplier. Unfortunately, the Government banned the practice. Probably the saddest part of all this is the Government will look us square in the eye and tell us that Ireland is a fabulously wealthy country with an economy that is the envy of the world. All the while we have elderly people wondering how they will get through the winter.

What's the problem? We can just continue to swap them for 100,000 migrants per year.

When foreign men can walk into Ireland after destroying their passports and have legal entitlements to reception, meals every day, a basic living allowance, medical care and clothes, while an Irish national born here who is homeless has a legal entitlement to a telephone number for a filthy, degrading hostel, where he's not guaranteed a bed and, if he's lucky enough to get one, he's thrown back onto the street the next morning and treated like absolute human refuse, something has gone catastrophically wrong. And that's exactly what Irish politicians have delivered.

This is a staggering shift. Between Q1 2020 and Q1 2026, the number of Irish nationals receiving Disability Allowance rose 14%. For non Irish nationals, it rose 41%. That means non Irish recipient numbers are growing at almost THREE TIMES the rate of Irish recipients.

Hi Sandra, just wondering if you could clarify something in relation to the RTE report from the Soc Dem think in. The report says that the Soc Dems had 'warned against' the further delaying of carbon tax increases on fuel. However. I just read a statement from Jennifer Whitmore on her website that says she's in favour of delaying the increase. I can't find any direct quotes online that back up the 'warned against' claim.... Any chance you could clarify? @sandra_hurley
