A mother and her three young children were trapped inside an upside-down SUV that was filling with water in a Florida canal. One of the little boys was banging on the door, screaming that his mom’s head was underwater. That’s when Casey Curtis heard the cries and ran toward the canal. He reached the submerged SUV and started pulling the children out one by one, getting all three to safety. But their mother was still inside. Casey went back to the vehicle and found her unconscious, still buckled into her seat with her head underwater. He lifted her face above the water, realized she wasn’t breathing and gave her a breath right there in the canal. She started breathing again. The mother spent several days in intensive care, but she survived. All three of her children survived too. Those kids watched a stranger pull them from a sinking SUV, then turn around and go back into the water for their mom when she couldn’t save herself. 21-year-old senior Dorian Jackson after he died while trying to save his sister from drowning during a kayaking trip at Lake Norman. Jackson’s sister was struggling in the water after her kayak capsized Saturday evening. Dorian attempted to help her onto his kayak, but he went underwater and never resurfaced. Faith, who was wearing a life jacket, was rescued by nearby residents. Dorian’s body was recovered the following afternoon. Jackson was a third-generation Aggie, Cheatham-White Scholar and marketing major who was set to begin a career with Wells Fargo after graduation. He was also involved with the Honors College, Student Government Association and the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. He was the oldest of eight children. A young man with so much ahead of him lost his life trying to save someone he loved.
