Alex Madera played four years of Division III baseball at Arcadia. All-American, .432 across four seasons. Then, in a graduate year at North Carolina, where he started all 61 games at shortstop and led the team in hitting. He signed with the Cubs organization this spring. Division III is not where baseball goes to end. For some players, it is where it gets built.

Story time: Eric Chavez was a special assistant to the GM for the Angles when I was in Low A Burlington, Iowa. He came to town. They’d typically gather the young nobodies up in the cage or clubhouse somewhere and tell us about the glory days for a while. 1/x

304 D1 baseball programs. 34-man roster cap. That’s roughly 10,300 total roster spots in the entire country. In 2027 the first full 5-in-5 class arrives. Current players can stay a fifth year. Coaches will keep the guys they already know. The math does not care about your son’s highlight video. Historically D1 baseball took about 2,600–2,700 high school freshmen a year. That number is dropping. Expect something closer to 1,800–2,200 HS athletes actually landing on D1 rosters in 2027. Some programs that used to take 8–10 high school kids are now taking 3–6. The transfer portal and JUCO still exist. They just compete for the same 34 spots. Every showcase brochure, every “national exposure” event, every recruiting service will still sell the dream of D1. The market they describe is much larger than the one that actually exists. Do the math for your family before you write the next check: • How many D1 programs from your state actually take freshmen from high school each year? • What positions are they actually replacing? • Is your son a difference-maker or a developmental project? If the honest answer is that D1 is a long shot, that is not failure. Seven out of a hundred high school players play college baseball at any level. Most of those seven are not Division I. The families who define winning as “play college baseball and get a degree” are the ones who stay happy. Know the real number. Then decide where to spend the time and money.
