Just a note on Hillsborough and alcohol, given the debate now going on about drinking within view of football pitches. 1. In 2 lengthy inquests and a public inquiry, no credible evidence has been put forward that drinking on 15/4/89 was any different to any other big game of the era 2. Hard data sources such as pub takings, CCTV footage, numbers of arrests, pub/ shop licensee reports and litter bins all suggest that fan behaviour and drinking was unremarkable 3. The Hillsborough Independent Panel found that alcohol consumption was ‘reasonable and unexceptional for a sporting event’ 4. The Panel (and the 2016 inquest jury) also found that drinking by *fans* played no part in the genesis of the disaster 5. However, it is not clear what senior police commanders were doing in the run up to the game in their ‘missing hours’. Investigators appear to have hit a wall of silence here. 6. Various inquiries have criticised South Yorkshire Police for promoting - without evidence - a portrayal of drunkenness causing the disaster, in order to deflect from their own very serious failures. 7. The National Police Chiefs Council (formerly ACPO) have apologised for blaming fans for the disaster, and for the police failures that did actually cause it

So what is the FSA position on drinking in the stands? It’s unfair to criminalise fans for having a pint – especially since you can sit in the same seat drinking alcohol whilst watching an Oasis gig or rugby league. We are fundamentally sceptical of any law which is only targeted at football supporters. Many clubs are in favour changing the law as well. WSL ran a successful pilot, meaning fans can now drink in the stands at many grounds, while the EFL has long supported a trial. We think that the legislation is outdated and deserves to be reviewed. You heard that right. Reform UK in Sunderland have pulled support for Show Racism the Red Card, calling them ‘a politically-charged organisation with an agenda’. That agenda is driving racism out of football. Sunderland stands against racism, even if our Reform council doesn't.

I don’t think that’s right. Losing a pregnancy can be devastating. You and your partner shouldn’t have to worry about going straight back to work. So we’re changing the law. From April, women and their partners will be entitled to two weeks off after any pregnancy loss. And we’re making wider changes, with new rights to time off when you lose someone you love. When you’re grieving, you deserve the time and space to do that.
