A 5-foot-2 principal heard gunshots in her own building and made a choice that most people would never make.
Dawn Hochsprung was coming out of a staff meeting at Sandy Hook Elementary when the sound hit her ears. She didn't lock the door. She didn't wait. She moved—straight into the hallway to face what was happening.
School psychologist Mary Sherlach was with her.
Within seconds, they found him. The intruder was feet away. Hochsprung didn't hesitate. She lunged, trying to bring him down herself.
She was killed instantly. So was Sherlach.
But in those final moments, Hochsprung's hand found the school's intercom system, leaving it open. Every classroom in the building heard what followed. Teachers with no warning suddenly had seconds to react—hiding children in closets, locking doors, saving lives—because of the sound coming through that speaker.
Her family would later hope that for just one second, the shooter felt fear seeing a determined 5-foot-2 woman running straight at him instead of away.
Hochsprung had only been principal for two years. In that short time, she'd made building safety a priority and become the "Sandy Hook Book Fairy," getting kids excited about reading. Those who knew her said she was born for this work.
A university would later honor her memory by naming a center for school safety and mental health after her.
She had every reason to stay safe that morning. Instead, she ran toward danger—and the warning she left behind saved children she never got to see grow up.

I have undertaken this project to put a face to 9/11 by posting a photo of everyone kille that day. Pictured below was 58 year old Loraine Bay who was a senior flight attendant on Flight 93. Even though she had 37 years of experience she chose to work in the coach section of the plane because she liked interacting with as many passengers as possible and liked mentoring the newer flight attendants. She also liked to send greeting cards to people and had mailed two from the airport that morning having chosen this flight because it was non-stop. In addition to fragmented body parts they found her badge and corkscrew which are now in the 9/11 museum. She was survived by her husband of 22 years and to forget even a single one of these people is a blasphemy!

His brothers refused to leave him. They carried him out. Because they stayed with Danny, they were not inside when the South Tower came down minutes later.

Ralph Dias was hit by snipers three separate times, crawling the whole way, refusing to stop until he had knocked out the machine gun that was killing his friends. He threw the grenade that destroyed it in the same instant a bullet killed him. He was nineteen.
He came from tiny Shelocta, in the hills of Indiana County, Pennsylvania, a Portuguese American kid who did not even finish high school. He went two years at Elderton Joint High and then, in October 1967, walked into a recruiting station in Pittsburgh and joined the Marines. He trained at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton, and in April 1969 he shipped to Vietnam as a rifleman with Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, part of the 1st Marine Division. That put him in exactly the country I have been writing about today, the Que Son Mountains and the valleys of Quang Nam Province southwest of Da Nang.
On November 12, 1969, Dias was part of a reaction force sent to help a pinned down Marine platoon. When his own group got pinned too, he could see both units taking casualties, and he could see where it was coming from. One enemy machine gun in a bunker was doing most of the killing. So he decided, on his own, to go take it out.
He charged across open ground toward the bunker and a sniper hit him almost immediately. He dragged himself behind a rock. Then he got up and went again, and got hit a second time. Now he could not even walk, so he crawled, fifteen meters, over open ground, toward the gun. He threw several grenades and none of them did the job. He was out of range and out of strength, but not out of will.
So he moved into the open one last time. A third sniper round hit him. And as he was going down, mortally wounded, he threw one final grenade, and this one landed true and destroyed the machine gun position that had been tearing his fellow Marines apart.
He died right there. His stubborn, impossible refusal to quit saved the men he had come to help. President Nixon signed his Medal of Honor citation. They buried him at Oakdale Cemetery in Leetonia, Ohio, and cut his name into the Wall on panel 16 West, line 63. A stretch of state route back in Ohio carries his name now. A high school dropout from the Pennsylvania hills who, in the last ninety seconds of his life, crawled through three sniper hits to finish a job nobody ordered him to do.

JUST IN: I am sad to report that one of the shooting victims at the 2024 Butler Pennsylvania assassination attempt of President Trump has died.
James “Jim” Copenhaver of Moon Township, Pennsylvania, has died at 76. Jim was one of the two spectators seriously wounded in the July 13, 2024, assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Butler.
Copenhaver was shot twice, once in the left arm and once in the abdomen, while seated in the bleachers. He underwent multiple surgeries for a transected colon, abdominal injuries, and related complications. Bullet fragments remained in his body, and he lived the rest of his life with permanent injuries.
He survived the attack that killed firefighter Corey Comperatore and grazed Trump. In the years that followed he continued treatment, later joined a lawsuit alleging Secret Service failures at the rally, and wrote the foreword to a book about the shooting in which he reflected on how he would be remembered.
He is now the second fatality connected to that day.
