Every Pacific island country brings experience, priorities and perspectives that deserve a strong voice in WHO. At #RC77 in Manila, I presented my manifesto to health leaders from the Cook Islands 🇨🇰, Fiji 🇫🇯, the Federated States of Micronesia 🇫🇲, Samoa 🇼🇸and Solomon Islands 🇸🇧. Population size, geography and distance from global decision-making centres should never limit a country’s influence within WHO or its access to the Organization’s support. To put this principle into practice, if elected WHO Director-General, I will appoint a Special Envoy on Small and Island Developing States. The Envoy will help ensure that all small countries and island states are treated equally in all WHO services and processes. This commitment is central to my vision of a country-first WHO: one in which every Member State participates as an equal partner and receives support according to its needs.

Live from @WHOWPRO in Manila - it’s the 77th session of the @WHO Regional Committee for the Western Pacific Region - our governing body in the most populous WHO Region of all, with 2.2 billion people, over a quarter of the world population. We have an urgent and ambitious agenda - from longstanding priorities to emerging issues impacting health and wellbeing across the life course. Immunization. Hypertension control. Tobacco control. Artificial intelligence. We are also discussing healthy ageing in a region that is graying quickly - as well as exploring new, more efficient ways to ensure an essential health stockpile through pooled procurement, to support countries all the more. Join the proceedings online at who.int/westernpacific or via our @WHOWPRO @X, @YouTube, @facebook and @LinkedIn platforms. My thanks to all our Member States for their attendance and collaboration - and to all our health partners from civil society to donors and philanthropies. Gratitude as well to outgoing Regional Committee Chair the Hon. @AtonioDr, Minister of Health of Fiji, and Vice Chair, the Hon. Satoshi Ezoe, Senior Asst. Minister for Global Health at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of @japan, for their guidance over the past year. And, not least, my thanks to our esteemed WHO Director-General, my brother @DrTedros for gracing us with his presence on what is his last RC with us before he steps down at the end of his tenure next year. A bittersweet, poignant moment for all of us. WHO’s mandate and vision of Health for All has never been more vital. So, join us at #RC77 - we look forward to having you be part of our most important gathering of the year. 🙏

#UNGA81

Health sovereignty does not mean countries working alone. It means countries leading and partners aligning behind national priorities. That is the idea behind the Accra Reset, and it ran through my exchange with partners in Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮: the Ordre National des Médecins, Institut Pasteur, the Centre Suisse de Recherches Scientifiques, @UNICEF_CIV, @UNFPA and @UNAIDS. It also has a practical side. As external assistance declines, countries need sustainable domestic financing without losing the national capacity they have built. Partners asked how @WHO can best support this transition. Health sovereignty also requires greater capacity to produce medicines locally and regionally. This can help reduce inequities, supported by strong regional institutions such as Africa CDC and the African Medicines Agency. On universal health coverage, the path remains the one set out in the 1978 Declaration of Alma-Ata, which will mark its 50th anniversary in 2028: health for all through primary health care (PHC) rooted in communities. That is why PHC is the signature initiative of my manifesto. My thanks to partners for an open and thoughtful exchange.

@NialeKaba_Off | @CI_Diplomatie | @Pierre_DIMBA | @Santeci | @CotedivoireOnu | @belgiumabidjan | @BelgiumMFA | @BelgiumUNGeneva

The HIV response has unfinished business. @UNAIDS 2026: 5.0 million people didn’t know their status in 2025. 32.1 million were on treatment. 74% were virally suppressed. It isn’t finished until everyone diagnosed can stay well. #PLHIVLeadersNow @floriako @SboNkosiZA

Today would have been Michel Foucault's birthday. A victim of France's legal and social prejudice against homosexuality, Foucault was a French philosopher who addressed topics such as power, sexuality and truth. His story is remembered today through #AIDSQuilt panels like these.

Two-thirds of Americans now say they favor Medicare for All, according to a new @KFF poll. That's the highest level KFF has recorded since it started polling the idea in 2016, up from 53 percent in 2020. This tells me two things: Americans are fed up with rising health care costs, and no one is offering up a more realistic, more effective alternative. You can't beat something with nothing, and right now Medicare for All is close to the only something on the table. Health policy experts need to offer something else. What are your best ideas? (Mine are coming)
