The number of times I’ve seen my work ripped off by people like this (never knowingly by this person, though) and crime Facebook pages is ridiculous. And promoting it like this as though they’re an actual alternative to local reporters stinks.
As local news budgets shrink and misinformation spreads, independent creators are stepping up to keep communities informed. With more than half a million followers, TikToker Andrew Barton is passionate about local journalism. Channel 4 News asked him to investigate what the future of local news looks like and whether new government funding can help keep it alive.

This is kinda what keeps me awake at night. What happens with these content thieves and indeed AI when there’s nowt left to nick, eh? Where’s the new, original thought going to come from? It’s been good to see a lot of pushback on my feed. Keep making the noise, people! Comes a time when if your livelihood is threatened by a toxic combo of national giants and faceless local ‘social media creators’ with zero moral compass*, you start to fight back. *Oh hey there btw!! We you know who you are! 👋 😘
Can’t help thinking this is symptomatic of a wider cultural shift post internet from AI bros through media boardrooms to ‘content creators’ where all information online is somehow ‘free’, available to steal and costs ‘nothing’ to produce. A disaster for accountability everywhere.

There’s a difference between sharing someone’s journalism and taking their work to make your own content. I’ve had my work lifted multiple times by this content creator. My words, my pictures and my video, all without permission. It’s particularly frustrating when he talks about his views growing as local news fades away, while repeatedly using the work of the journalists who are actually out there reporting it.

Proper journalism costs. So give it the credit that matches the value. Without it, you wouldn’t have anything to nick for your blog or websites which go on to make money out of that original journalism.
A (polite☺️) reminder that if you’re posting quotes to credit the journo/outlet. For eg the George Russell quotes about cooling vest were from British media session that only The Times and Daily Mail published. It costs a lot to send us all the way to Malaysia to get the access

There’s a lot of this about, sadly. Increasingly so, because it’s lucrative. Some are faceless accounts run by experienced former senior journalists who should and indeed do know better. #ClicksOverConscience 👀
Hello #journalism #students - we often discuss the role of "content creators" in modern news production - and they're sometimes clearly untrained idiots with an agenda. So here's something refreshingly encouraging. Andrew Barton, who loves local news.

‘Content creators’ who do this sort of thing solely to profit from other people’s work are the lowest of the low. #WeKnowWhoYouAre 👀
Perhaps the real story here is that Andrew routinely uses other news organisations’ content in his TikTok videos rather than producing his own original journalism. He takes legitimate reporting (including photos), repackages the information into a script, then adds his own (1/4)
