A little bit about AI and empathy.
Human empathy plays favourites... the favourites look like us. The neural empathy signal drops when the face belongs to another racial group. And empathy has a battery. The doctor who greets the first patient on Monday is not quite the doctor who greets the last one on Friday. Same knowledge, same hands. Less charge. Warmth decays with the clock.
So the resource we call the heart of doctoring is rationed by clock, fatigue, and resemblance.
But AI's - they are able to empathize with anyone. It may be an artificial construct but humans appreciated it. When chatbot answers to real patient questions went head to head with physicians', evaluators rated the AI empathetic ten times as often! And the machine's warmth is UNIFORM. It does not check your skin, your accent, or the hour of day. It gives the 5 PM patient the 8 AM doctor.
Yes, it is artificial - but hey, so is insulin. We never asked insulin to "mean it". We ask it to work and to come in equal doses.
New post on Substack.
AI empathy is artificial. But could that possibly be better.
