Such humility, such a command over sanskrit and depth is a rarety in the cinema world today
It feels proud that we know their family closely right from childhood
Firstly as a fellow Chitrapur Saraswat Brahmin, his full surname is Nagarkatti. For the film world he is known as Nag.
We are hardly 22k in the whole world. Yet we have produced artistes who have defined cinema. Anant mam (as I have known him) along with other greats like Gurudutt, Shyam Benegal has now reached the summit of cinematic achievement. In fact if I am not mistaken Anant Mam's first lead role in a hindi movie was in a movie "Kalyug" directed by none other than Shyam Benegal.
Incidentally, he still visits Anandashram where I have taken deeksha when I was 12
His mother was an inmate there and both Anant mam and his equally illustrious brother the late Shankar mam used to visit regularly
The last time I met him there (a few years ago) he mixed with everyone and also offered to play tabla during evening bhajans. He himself can sing bhajans very effortlessly
His sister used to live in our society and his nephew and niece played together in our growing years. We are still in touch
His introduction to drama was in Mumbai. The Kanara Saraswat Association stage which has been the training ground for many well known actors.
We have a socio cultural event every Diwali where our community members would typically present full length 3 act plays
Anant mam first made his mark here in konkani and marathi drama.
What touched me in this speech was he mentioned that he has mentioned his life at a math as well as the ashram and also about Mumbai where he got introduced to stage
I have not seen him on stage as it was before I was born but have heard stories from our society people
I have not met him in years now and my contact is only through his nephew and niece.
But I still remember moments where he always connected as a normal human and never as such a huge star of the kannada film industry
And yes it really feels unreal that someone I have known since childhood has been conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke award which is supposed to be the most prestigious award for the cinema industry
