The Prussian military theorist Carl von Clausewitz reminds us that war is the continuation of politics—or policy—by other means. So what are U.S. political objectives? It is not entirely clear. /2

There are several possible objectives:
1. Set back (again) Iran’s nuclear program
2. Weaken Iran’s ballistic missile & drone capabilities
3. Undermine regional proxies — Hezbollah, Hamas, & the Houthis
4. Deter further violence against protesters
5. Orchestrate regime change /3

What about allies in the region? Israel has been hawkish. But as Admiral Winnefeld stressed, this may largely be a U.S. operation. Gulf partners, such as Saudi Arabia, are not eager to support offensive action, but they are on high alert defensively in case of retaliation. /6

To conclude, it is important to consider when force is used, what comes next? The biggest danger may not be action itself but triggering something larger than intended, or acting without a clear path forward. /9
