I had a 12-year-old tell me AI data centers are bad because they are using too much water. When I was 12 I was worried about my AIM away message. Interesting times.

I asked Chat GPT how to fix something today and the answer was wrong. I had to use my critical thinking skills to fix it in the end. Taking the human brain “wins” while I can…

Thinking of getting a Tesla for the self driving. I know it needs to be “supervised” but I’d love everyone’s thoughts who has one… what do you love/hate?

Here's my take from this thread: $TSLA self-driving is life changing (perhaps under-appreciated by everyone who doesn't have one?) and we're all driving around in our combustion engine machines like plebes. Perhaps it's especially being underestimated how life changing this will be for safer teen driving and helping the elderly get around (Just in time for Baby Boomers). I'm excited...

As avid campers, the price of steaks and diesel (we pull an Airstream with an F-250) are a real problem right now 🫠 Inflation can feel very different depending on what you spend your money on.

After the AI is ending humanity headline, I’m the most convinced that people really need to go touch grass. Hug a tree. Go for a hike. It’s better than therapy.

The hallmark of an open mind is not letting your ideas become your identity. If you define yourself by your opinions, questioning them is a threat to your integrity. If you see yourself as a curious person or a lifelong learner, changing your mind is a moment of growth.

Is anyone else finding that the narrative "AI will make us all dumber" isn't actually happening in practice? I certainly am feeling MORE knowledgable the more I use it.

We have one hell of a bifurcated housing market right now: Year-over-year home price increases: San Francisco +13.3% Chicago +9.5% Nassau County, NY +9.4% Milwaukee +9% West Palm Beach +8.9% Year-over-year home price decreases: San Antonio -2.1% Fort Worth -1.3% Dallas -1% Austin -1% Phoenix -0.9% Context matters of course: some of today’s laggards also had the biggest pandemic-era booms. I’m a retired brain surgeon and I wanna tell you why you feel like life is passing by. I just need one minute to explain this to you so hang in there. Repetitive daily routines stop the brain from recording clear detailed memories. When every day looks the same, your brain does not track time the same as a clock does. It tracks change. If nothing new happens then days, months, and years start to blur together. This is know as Time compression. When life lacks variety, your brain compresses past days together, making it feel like time is sped up. To stop feeling like life is passing you by, add new experiences to your life. Break routine habits, like changing your daily home routine, taking a different route to work, or trying a new hobby. Schedule small trips or plan new adventures so your days do not blend together. Practice mindfulness by staying fully focused on what you are doing right now and not trying to race off to the next task. Keep a journal and write down happy memories or memorable parts of the day before you go to sleep. Take deep, calm breaths when you feel anxious or rushed to return your focus to the moment. You can and you will retrain your brain to not feel like life is passing you by by following these few simple measures.

An advisor likely had him in a diversified portfolio which is why it won’t track the S&P 500 returns… People who argue “advisor bad just VOO and chill” have a much too simplistic view of portfolio construction, and no concept of managing risk (especially for someone going into retirement). It also begs the question what other services did the advisor provide for their fee? I think VOO is an incredible asset to have exposure to, but people have to understand how to compare returns appropriately.
My dad made good money throughout his career and paid a financial advisor for over 20 years to manage it. Since inception in 2003, his portfolio's annualized return was 7.63%. He's contributed $487,115 of his own money over that time, and it's grown to $1,531,253 today. The S&P 500 has returned about 11.58% annualized over that same period. Had his money simply tracked the index instead, he'd likely be sitting on somewhere around $3.4 to $3.6 million today, roughly $2 million more, with no advisor fees along the way.

Was 2020 one of the best things to happen to Americans’ wealth? Look at this (might surprise you)... Pic 1: Shows how tiny the wealth in the bottom 50% percentile is in the grand scheme. Pic 2: Shows how the bottom 50%'s NET worth (Fed data is assets - liabilities) has trended up sharply since 2020. Stunning growth in net worth for this cohort that no one seems to be talking about.

People ask why I focus so much on the macro/consumer instead of constantly spitting out financial strategies on Twitter. Because understanding why markets are moving fascinates me, and makes me a better investor and wealth planner. What good is being invested if you can’t STAY invested? When someone tells me, “I’m expecting a huge crash and recession,” I want to have an educated response based on earnings, employment, consumer data, credit conditions, valuations, etc. Not just: “Hey, historically markets go up. Stay invested.”
