Why did I start building P2P? A thread 馃У

I did not start from a white paper. I started from an essay written in 1784 by a man who never left his home town and never held a coin worth arguing about. This is the thread I have been meaning to write for two years.

People holding money they could not use. Keys in hand. Balance on screen. And no way to turn it into the currency the landlord takes, unless somebody with a licence agreed to allow it that week. I stopped calling that ownership.

Immaturity is the inability to use your own judgement. Kant's word is not stupidity. It is the inability to think without guidance from another - and he says we impose it on ourselves, out of laziness and a want of courage. I read that and thought about ramps.

A book for understanding. A pastor for conscience. His list of the things we hire to think in our place ends: I need not think, if only I can pay. Two hundred and forty years later I could add the venue that serves as your permission to touch your own money.

You can hold your keys and still be a minor. This is where I think the industry, including me, was wrong for years. Self-custody is not maturity if the exit is licensed. You are permitted to think, in a language nobody licenses you to speak.

Not on the chain. At the doorway. The chain does not care who you are. The doorway does. It is the last part of the stack that still asks 'permissions', still sets the spread, and can close on a Tuesday without telling you why.

It is easy to remain immature. First the guardians make their charges docile, Kant writes, then they display the dangers of walking alone. I have read that paragraph and then read a suspension notice, and struggled to tell them apart.

After a few falls, people learn to walk. Kant's answer to the guardians. The danger is smaller than advertised; the spectacle of one fall frightens everyone off further attempts. Gox, Celsius, FTX were real falls, recruited ever since as arguments for guardianship.

A revolution cannot reform a way of thinking. It topples a despot, then new prejudices take the place of the old ones. We left banks for venues with a withdrawal button someone else controls. That is a change of guardian, not an emergence. I did not want to build the next one.

Not a better guardian. A shorter distance. Every design meeting since has come back to one question of Kant's, and to a distinction of his that I ended up treating as an architecture document.

Inside the machine, you obey. The officer on duty does not argue. A system needs some members to act passively for the mechanism to work. That is a merchant filling an order: escrow-bound, deterministic, no discretion. Boring on purpose. We built it to be boring.

Outside it, you argue without restriction. The same officer may publish on the failures of military service. The same merchant who fills orders mechanically may say whatever he likes about capital controls, spreads, and what it costs to send money home. Both, in one person.

The machine needs your role. Not your person. This is the whole product, stated in eighteenth-century terms. Proof the payment settled is everything the mechanism requires. Demanding an entire identity to perform a mechanical function collapses Kant's two uses into one.

Not a loophole. The correct quantity. A proof that the transfer happened, revealing nothing about who you are, discloses what the machinery needs and nothing that belongs to you as a citizen. I did not pick the cryptography then find the philosophy. It went the other way.

One age cannot bind the next. A contract meant to foreclose all further enlightenment is void, Kant says - void even if ratified by kings and the most solemn treaties. That is my answer to anyone asking why we will not hold a switch that a later group of people cannot take back.

Could a people impose this on itself? Kant's criterion for any law. I run capital controls through it, and a forty-percent official spread, and a rule against converting your own wages. Then I run our own fee switch through it, which is the part founders skip.

Kant was no anarchist. He wanted public order. His formula was blunt: argue as much as you like, but obey. Conduct inside civic machinery may be constrained. Publication, research and open reasoning may not. I would rather argue the strong claim than the maximal one.

Not an enlightened age. An age of enlightenment. No authority may permanently foreclose a people's ability to exchange value with one another, or to argue about the means in the open. That is why I am building P2P. Ramps that verify the payment, not the person.
