DOGRA ITIHAS: DURGARA SE DOGRA RAJ TAK | DAY 2 — JAMBU LOCHAN AND THE FOUNDING OF JAMMU: TRADITION, NOT VERIFIED HISTORY
—————————————————
Local tradition gives Jammu a founder long before any chronicle names the city. The story says Raja Jambu Lochan, of a solar line, came hunting along the Tawi. On the right bank he saw a tiger and a goat drinking from the same pool, predator and prey at peace. He took the sight as a sign and raised his capital there, calling it Jambupura. In time the name shortened to Jammu. A linked tale places his brother, Bahu Lochan, earlier on the opposite bank, where Bahu Fort still stands above the river.
Family accounts carried by the Jamwal house push this founding deep into antiquity, sometimes toward the age of the epics, and trace the line to Kush, son of Rama. Later retellings repeat the tiger-and-goat omen, the choice of the right bank, and the shift of power from Bahu toward the present city. These stories explain how the ruling clan understood its own beginning. They are not contemporary records.
No inscription, foreign notice or chronicle from that supposed age confirms Jambu Lochan, the omen, or a city already called Jammu. Historians who have weighed the evidence place the emergence of Jammu as a known centre much later, nearer the centuries before the first firm medieval references, not in a documented founding thousands of years earlier. Muhammad Azam Didamari’s Kashmir chronicle, written long after the event, even put the city’s rise around the start of the tenth century. The archaeological silence matches that caution: tools and early settlement exist in the hills, but they do not name this king.
The legend still matters. It fixed Bahu and the Tawi bank in memory, gave the Jamwal clan a founder, and supplied the picture of harmony that later rulers liked to claim. Day 2 stops at that line. Jambu Lochan belongs to tradition. The written name of the land, Durgara, has not yet appeared.
