I am pleased to announce our first P50 Center hybrid seminar by Dr. Shiro Horisawa from @TWMU_function on “Surgery at Forel’s Field for #MovementDisorders and Beyond”.
Join us on May 8th, 4-5 pm EDT, virtually or in person, if you are in Boston area.
Very exciting presentation by @Maitreyee_W with an amazing advance toward real-time synthesis of continuous speech from neural signal in premotor 6v cortex 👏👏👏 The door to endless possibilities in speech rehabilitation & treatment! @sergeydoestweet @DrDavidBrandman#BCImeeting
we developed & tested a deep-learning platform #DystoniaBoTXNet to automatically determine the #BotulinumToxin treatment efficacy. Based on structural brain MRI, DystoniaBoTXNet discovered treatment #marker & achieves 96.3% accuracy in 19.2 sec in predicting injection efficacy.
Very excited & proud of the @SimonyanLab team for developing the first #BCI (brain-computer interface) for patients w laryngeal #dystonia and starting this one-of-a-kind clinical trial bit.ly/3N7RYBk! Grateful to @NIDCD for funding. Follow us for updates & participation!
Pathophysiology involves widespread alterations of neural network function and structure, abnormal dopaminergic and GABAergic function, & maladaptive plasticity. Alterations of premotor-parietal regions are of critical importance being influenced by external and polygenic risks.
Genetic & extrinsic risk factors may trigger symptoms of laryngeal #dystonia in susceptible individuals. Understanding genetic/extrinsic risk interplay with neural changes may lead to novel preventive approaches.
Laryngeal #dystonia diagnosis is challenging & may extend over 5 years. Clinical assessment should include a detailed case history, auditory-perceptual testing, nasoendoscopy & neuro exam. The highest priority is the development & implementation of accurate diagnostic biomarkers.
Patients with generalized #dystonia reported the highest #suicide (50%), followed by 46% in patients with multifocal/ segmental dystonia and 33.3% in patients with focal dystonia. The highest suicidal ideation-to-attempt ratio of 4:1 was in generalized dystonia.
Based on objective microstructural biomarker and using raw structural MRI, DystoniaNet achives 98.8% accuracy in diagnosing laryngeal dystonia, cervical dystonia and blepharospasm, while referring 3.5% of cases for further examination. The speed of diagnosis is 0.36 sec!
The biomarker components include alterations in corpus callosum, thalamic radiation, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, inferior temporal and superior orbital gyri, all of which are known to contribute to various aspects of #dystonia pathophysiology.
It’s a poster award season for the lab! Congratulations to Laura de Lima Xavier @XavierLL1 & Sandra Hanekamp @sandrahanekamp for winning the Best Poster Design Award at Boston Speech Motor Control Symposium #2019BSMCS

Our new paper on brain networks in #dystonia is out in Movement Disorders @movedisorder. Disorganized network kernel specific for each type of dystonia drives disorganization of a larger scale functional connectome bit.ly/2zJ2LPx
If you are in Boston area, we are returning to the Voice & Speech Lecture Series @MassEyeAndEar after the summer break with a talk by Glenn Bunting, MS, CCC-SLP, on the treatment of functional voice and speech disorders. Join us on Sept 17, 12-1pm.
2- It is a time to turn to objective measures that are based not solely on experience of a physician/SLP with #SpasmodicDysphonia but are rooted in disease pathophysiology. Using brain imaging & machine learning, the accuracy of diagnosis is up to 81%. bit.ly/2tJKkWK
