NEW: Researchers unveil “Shielded Bitcoin,” a design for private Bitcoin transfers directly on L1. No soft fork. No bridge. No separate consensus chain. Yeah, this could be a very big deal.

Is this Bullish or bearish for zcash:native ? asking for a friend.

Bitcoin L1 private transfers compete directly

La idea es muy interesante: privacidad en Bitcoin L1 sin cambios de consenso. Ahora toca ver qué tal funciona en la práctica y si mantiene privacidad y usabilidad.🤡

Real test is privacy and usability at scale

ZEC shielded on its own chain. This is Bitcoin L1

That would be a dagger in the heart of Zcash

maybe you should read the papers you post to your audience. that paper is a Zcash advertisement

not sure anyone read the thing beyond the title tl;dr - if you somehow solved the laundry list of fundamental issues, then even after that you would still be roughly 7 years behind zcash it's a synthetic ledger with significant tradeoffs, some of which are fundamental (can't be mitigated), and others requiring many, many years of work + new research to be published and scrutinized (assuming it can even work) the Bitcoin L1 does not validate the private state, prevent double-spends, or reconcile the balances, that's enforced by some offchain protocol -- so, saying L1 transfers is not entirely honest it also has: - a trusted setup - no fee anonymization (much worse than it sounds) - no in-protocol mechanism for getting actual BTC in or out (which means you are holding synthetics) - no real consideration for scale - several offchain parts that can't be run locally which means tracing and linkage and censorship - vulnerability to quantum without a plan - no working implementation for witness encryption where the last used scheme was broken (!) and depends on 330 TB ciphertext. that's terabytes btw (though they claim advancements here so let's see) it only somewhat can work if: i) you somehow acquire the private synthetic BTC inside their ledger to begin with (you cant) ii) every counterparty recognizes the same offchain metaprotocol iii) some trust minimized mechanism connects the synthetic balances back to actual BTC iv) several other advancements are made to the scale, quantum, and foundational cryptography considerations, which is experimental and would require many years to establish (if at all) point iii) specifically means that this is not fungible for the underlying I respect that people are working on this and taking notes from zcash finally. but the claims on this app vs. what's established are light years apart

I can see this working. I’m interested.

Or you could use an L1 with privacy already baked in for 10 years, which scales better. All the good qualities of BTC and no bolt-ons necessary: $ZEC

They want to make it like zcash🤣, it will leak information and it will never be perfect because it was not built for being encrypted unlike zcash:native. This just proves that zcash is what bitcoin should have been.

Yes baby! Screw you Zcash!!!

I always just assumed they will figure this out one day. Much like the quantum threat, if enough people see it as a problem, and the demand is still strong ,someone will fix it.

zcash:native is actually stronger than this proposal being live for years , just buy that

This could be a major development for Bitcoin privacy. If private transfers can work directly on Bitcoin L1 without a soft fork or separate chain, it could change how people think about privacy on Bitcoin. It could also put more pressure on privacy-focused projects like Zcash. Zcash already offers shielded transactions using zero knowledge proofs, so Bitcoin gaining similar functionality could increase competition for privacy users and developers. Interesting question if Bitcoin gets native-level privacy like this, how much would it affect Zcash’s long term role as a privacy focused chain?

I'm sure Democrats and the Globalist are not happy about this breakthrough. They want complete control.
