GDP per capita on its own is a weak proxy for living standards between rich countries, anyways heres regions of North America based on the Human Development Index.
we have some serious work to do

You are out of your fucking mind if you think Alabama has higher living standards than Ontario. The latter has a life expectancy nearly a full decade longer than the former.

It is no secret that slavery and segregation massively encumbered the development of the American south.

And the assumption is low GDP per capita countries will be able to maintain their high standard of living despite inflation, stagnation, low productivity, and high government debt?

We don鈥檛 have low GDP per Capita, inflation in America is higher, and their debt situation is so so much worse it鈥檚 hard to imagine. Their deficit is over twice as large as a percent of GDP, and interest payments on their debt is 20% of federal spending (10% here).

The maritimes have been poor since confederation, this is mostly a geography issue

My major quibble is I do not think years of education is a useful metric and that arbitrarily inflates Canada's living standards. Who cares if people have more university degrees here if they have lower real incomes?

HDI is much more unserious as a barometer of living standards than GDP per capita. A third of it is dedicated to years of schooling with no cap, what does a bunch of people doing 4 year masters programs have to do with a country's living standards?

GDP/Cap is flawed but HDI even more so given the ridiculous weight it grants to cumulative years of education while largely disregarding what that education will buy you

HDI is also nonsense. If you think the average Albertan is more developed than the average Quebecois, you might be a Pakistani economist
