On November 16, 1999, 24-year-old Cherica Adams was driving through Charlotte, North Carolina, while about 30 weeks pregnant with her first child. The baby's father was Carolina Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth. Their relationship had become troubled, and according to prosecutors, Carruth wanted Cherica to end the pregnancy. She chose to continue it.
That night, Cherica was shot four times while driving her BMW. The attack was not random. Another man, Van Brett Watkins, later testified that Carruth had helped arrange the shooting. Despite her injuries, Cherica managed to steer her car into a nearby yard, sound the horn for help and call 911 herself. She remained conscious long enough to tell the dispatcher what had happened.
Doctors performed an emergency Caesarean section roughly 75 minutes later, delivering her son, Chancellor Lee Adams, about ten weeks prematurely. Although the bullets did not directly strike him, the loss of blood and oxygen before his birth caused severe neurological injuries, including cerebral palsy.
Cherica survived the initial attack but never recovered. She remained in a coma and died on December 14, 1999, 28 days after the shooting. Before her death, hospital staff brought Chancellor to her bedside. Her family later recalled that her heart rate increased when her newborn son was placed against her.
Chancellor survived, but he would grow up without the mother who had fought to keep him alive. His grandmother, Saundra Adams, became his primary caregiver and raised him while also advocating for her daughter's memory.
Carruth was not convicted of Cherica's murder. In 2001, a jury acquitted him of first-degree murder but convicted him of conspiracy to commit murder, shooting into an occupied vehicle and using an instrument with intent to destroy an unborn child. He received a lengthy prison sentence and was released in 2018.
The tragedy is often remembered through the football career and criminal case surrounding Carruth. But at its center was Cherica Adams, a young woman who, after being gravely wounded, used the last strength she had to summon help for herself and the child she was carrying.
