Few fantasy films have captured the return of hope as powerfully as this scene from Excalibur.
Percival has returned with the Holy Grail, Arthur has risen from his sickbed, and the land itself awakens with its king. As Arthur and his remaining knights ride to face Mordred, the barren countryside erupts into blossom and “O Fortuna” thunders over the charge.
It is pure Arthurian myth: shining armour, green light, falling petals and doomed heroes riding together one final time. Boorman takes the idea that the king and the land are one and turns it into one of the great fantasy sequences ever put on film.
Has any fantasy movie staged a better ride into battle?
