There's a particular type of cyclist I've learned never to trust.
The one who tells you they haven't been training.
I bumped into a mate recently and asked how the cycling was going.
“Ah, terrible. I've barely been on the bike the last few weeks.”
Fair enough. Life gets busy.
We arranged a spin for the weekend. I was expecting a nice steady couple of hours. Bit of chat. Coffee. Nothing heroic.
About 40 minutes in we're going up a climb and I'm starting to notice that the “hasn't been training” man is looking suspiciously comfortable.
I'm breathing through my ears.
He's telling me about something that happened at work.
Full sentences.
Not a bead of sweat.
Eventually I ask him to knock it back a bit.
“Sorry mate, thought we were taking it easy.”😂
Got home afterwards and curiosity got the better of me.
Opened Strava.
Last week: 417 km.
Week before: 386 km.
There was a 160 km ride in there that he'd titled:
“Little leg stretch.”
Mate. You HAVE been training.
Apparently if it isn't intervals, racing or a structured training plan, cyclists simply don't count it.
Four hundred kilometres of “just ticking over.”
I've now added “I haven't really been riding much” to the list of things cyclists say that cannot be taken at face value.
Alongside:
“It's a steady one today.”
“Just one more climb.”
And...
“It's not that expensive when you think about it.”
Tag that friend...
What did Polo7 see in General Impala?
Did they think he was really ethical and decent, or did they know he had egregious and lascivious pursuits which they could use to control him?
The more we hear about him, the worse it gets.
