Is Al making life better? NO. Is it making things cheaper? Quite the opposite. Is it improving the internet? It's drowning it in slop. Is it giving us more time to be creative? It's stealing that too. Surely it's making us smarter, though? Ohhhh, you won't believe this...

It happened to me too! Someone scraped my demo and uploaded it to the Google Play Store as an Android app. They even stole the game name & my screenshots, including the mouse cursor! 🤯 @Android @GooglePlay @Google, do you guys even review the apps uploaded to your store?

Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai explained why the boom in AI-created games isn’t likely to create a lasting demand for such projects, comparing them to “low-quality goods” that could never compare to human-made titles like Shadow of the Colossus. bit.ly/4iLQ9LR

Crazy how we were doing just fine without genAI not even 5 years ago. Let's go back to that.

We have tools that require you to think and be creative. AI is not one of them. It's a trap that stops your ability to learn and accept challenge. Create things yourself or with others. Take your time and do the tough parts. Feel proud when you say "I made this!" Reject AI.

Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros. and Kirby, is warning that AI could lead to a flood of unoriginal games. Sakurai points out that Steam has gone from around 275 game releases a year in 2010 to more than 19,000 today “AI can create games, but it can’t create something truly original.” Sakurai also argues that originality means creating something players don’t even know they want yet. He uses Fumito Ueda as an example, saying AI could imitate the style of games like ICO or Shadow of the Colossus, but it wouldn’t know what Ueda himself would create next.

I enjoy coding, I enjoy game design, I enjoy modeling, I enjoy putting it all together and see it come to life. I might be slow, and I might not be the best dev in existence, but I enjoy it. And I want to learn and improve. If I fall behind, so be it. This is not a race.

I hope you all are happy with the future that we all are heading into.
Digital Sun has canceled the public playtest for ReVamp because it fears AI tools could be used to reverse-engineer and clone the game. The first test will now be limited to a small group through Discord, starting October 29, with the public playtest planned for around January. Digital Sun said: “We’ve been concerned by the recent news of games being reverse-engineered, cloned and published before the original is even out.” “Showing games early is how indies get seen and find the fans who keep us going.”

A few months ago this place was filled with gamedevs posting clips and progress. (and toonsouls insanity) Now its just "white backround random guy" profile pic andy's with checkmarks glazing AI. I miss seeing cool stuff and wondering how / why the dev did what they did.

It is not strictly optimal to use AI for writing code if you wanna make something nuanced and interesting, and the majority of Google engineers and web developers aren't interested in that. They just want products Google and Amazon have tried entering gamedev with mixed results.
Can I be honest for a sec? Regarding LLMs in gaming, I feel more confused than ever. And I would like my peers and other people who are familiar in this field to chime in. It’s barely been a week since I made my post about distancing myself from a vibe coded project made by my friend in Smash. I even said “AI has no place in gaming”. After I made that post, I was reached out to by multiple colleagues in the space and people hired full time in software development. They educated me severely on the topic and I feel dumb now for my earlier sentiments. I was informed by my colleagues that it is now the norm to do 90% (and this is low estimate apparently) of all your coding with AI assistance or vibe coding. 75% of all new code at Google is made by AI and engineer approved. The vast majority of all the apps we use now are updated or maintained with AI coding - I imagine that also goes for Twitter, the very app you’re reading this on. So I figured okay - it’s here to stay in all software development - but where does that leave video games? I saw the posts from Epic Games, XBOX, and other publishers that seem to embrace the new era instead of rejecting it. In the last week I’ve been sent about a dozen different projects like this one that dissect and reintegrate Melee in multitudes of creative ways. One of them is even a build of Melee that runs natively at 120FPS and one of them simulates the feeling of a CRT almost perfectly. Some of them feel silly and useless, like low effort projects someone probably gave a single prompt and an ISO of Melee to build. Actual slop. And yet some feel like legitimately useful things that the community or people practicing could benefit from. I’m doing my best to navigate what is clearly a rapidly changing sector, especially when we regard the question of “Are Video Games Art?” And since they clearly are art, does that render AI in its development a bastardized amalgamation of what’s been “learned” from people with actual original ideas? Or is it strictly optimal to use AI in game development because games ARE software and therefore a necessary tool to wield in this day and age? I am making this post because I need more guidance on this topic and I feel open discussion on it might be the best way to do that.

Don't let billionaires convince you slop is the future. They're used to managing & directing, not making things themselves. Of course they can't see the difference. They don't understand your love for the craft. Keep making personal, beautiful games. You've got my support 💖

Do NOT let "vibe coding" become normalized in your mind. As an artist/writer who's also done coding in the past, generating code with AI is exactly the same as generating anything else with it. Everything you love about your favorite games and websites was coded by real people.

🧵Best Cozy Games - @David_Silbert writes, "Smushi Come Home (@SomeHumbleOnion) packs a whole lot of charm into a deceptively small title. Don't let the 3-4 hour runtime fool you; this game has plenty to offer if given the chance. (Did I mention you can ride a capybara?)"
