Psalm 23, part 3 of 3.
Even if you don’t believe in God, or have sworn Him off, or just haven’t thought about spiritual things lately, everything below is attached to your life.
(5) You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
“Prepare” in Hebrew is `arak, meaning put in order, set the battle, direct, set in a row. Most of us think of “prepare” as one sets a dinner table or puts all the elements together for an event. But this word suggests more than that. There is a overall plan, including one for battle (requisite with troops and artillery), and seeds in rows in a field that will yield a crop.
“A table” is shulchan, meaning a spread on a table, a meal. This has been thought out and is ready.
“Before me” is paniym, meaning face, presence, front, sight. This is in your realm of knowledge. You are aware of all this.
“In the presence” is neged, meaning opposite, against, other side.
“Of my enemies” is tsarar, which is actually a verb. It means besiege, bind up, distress, to cramp. Whatever struggles you have are aware of this table spread.
So, we have “God has completely and fully stocked my situation with everything necessary, including defense and blessings. I am aware of all this. My struggles and my adversaries have also seen this and are aware.”
