Critical illness recovery doesn’t end at ICU discharge.
The PHOENIX trial highlights an important shift—from survival alone to recovery of muscle, function and quality of life, through coordinated rehabilitation and nutrition.
A small feasibility trial, but an important step toward asking:
Can we do better, earlier, and together?
- Enhanced physiotherapy
- Optimised nutrition
- High intervention fidelity
- A structured ICU-to-community recovery pathway
Beyond ICU survival — toward meaningful recovery.

This summer, my son lost one of the biggest baseball games of his young life on an objectively bad call.
We talked about how life breaks like that sometimes and all you can do is respond, keep moving forward.
He asked, “Does anybody in real life actually do that?”
“Well, true champions do” we said.
A perfect example of a true champion in my friend @CoachLT_WMU after the controversial call that ended an extraordinarily well-played game that @WMU_Football should be so so proud of.

30 years ago today, L Goldman & I coined the term "hospitalist" in @NEJM. I suspected the field would matter; I didn't guess it would be the fastest-growing specialty in US history. To the docs who turned an idea into something real–& now essential–thanks!
