Bring back public Firing Squad executions President Trump has approved an Army firing squad for Nidal Hasan. The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recommended it, and Trump signed off on October 5. The Army secretary will set the time and place. If it is carried out, it would be the first U.S. military execution since 1961. Hasan, then an Army major and psychiatrist, opened fire on November 5, 2009, at Fort Hood’s Soldier Readiness Processing Center. He killed 13 people, 12 soldiers and one civilian and wounded 32. He shouted “Allahu Akbar.” A military jury sentenced him to death in 2013 on 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder. He admitted he was the shooter and said he acted to protect Islamic fighters from U.S. forces. He has sat on military death row at Fort Leavenworth ever since. Appeals can still delay the date. That is the case for bringing the firing squad back. Lethal injection has become a drawn-out fight over drugs, suppliers, and botched procedures. A firing squad is fast, certain, and visible. For a man who murdered unarmed American soldiers in the name of jihad, the fitting answer is a military sentence carried out by the service he betrayed not another decade of waiting.
