COOKIE: WHEN A HEADLINE BECOMES THE EVIDENCE Remember Cookie? In 2023, Bully Watch didn’t just count Keven Jones’ death in its XL Bully statistics. They used Cookie’s image in their material. They used his photograph as their Twitter/X banner. His bloodline was highlighted and his death became part of the argument that XL Bullies represented an exceptional danger. Cookie became a poster dog for the case against his own type. But the fuller story matters. A court has now heard that Keven was in poor health and taking blood-thinning medication. He died from extreme blood loss after Cookie bit him on the leg. The contemporary account wasn’t of the prolonged, frenzied mauling people may imagine from the words “killed by an XL Bully”. Chanel Fong maintained from the beginning that it was a tragic accident and described Cookie as playing too roughly. She said Cookie got off Keven when called away. Cookie was euthanised. Four years later, after the evidence was examined in court, Chanel Fong was unanimously acquitted of both charges against her. None of this diminishes Keven’s death or his family’s loss. But it demonstrates why fatality statistics without context can be so misleading. Victim: Keven Jones Dog: American XL Bully Outcome: Fatality Those three facts alone don’t tell you how the death occurred, the victim’s vulnerability, the circumstances of the interaction or the behaviour of the dog. Yet stripped of that context, a tragedy can become evidence of supposedly inherent breed danger. And there’s another question worth asking. Bully Watch and others were extraordinarily vocal about Cookie when his case supported the campaign for an XL Bully ban. Where is that same scrutiny now that the court proceedings have ended in acquittal? If Cookie’s photograph and Keven’s death were important enough to use when building the case against XL Bullies, the fuller circumstances revealed in court deserve to be heard too. DATA WITHOUT CONTEXT IS NOT EVIDENCE OF BREED PROPENSITY. A dog being involved in a fatality and a dog carrying out an unprovoked, sustained fatal mauling are not automatically the same thing. If we’re serious about preventing deaths, we need to understand why incidents happen, not simply collect tragedies according to breed. End Breed Discrimination.
