Great thread- points 3/4 especially chime @Mather_Keir
1/ When a Treasury Minister explicitly states, "I don't think employers are working people," it isn't a careless gaffe. It is a mask-slip. It reveals a deeply entrenched, 19th-century ideological rot at the heart of modern governance. Let’s break down why this is so dangerous. 🧵

How many businesses have survived, (or survived that bit longer) enabling employees to retain their jobs bc their employer worked 80,100,120hr weeks when times were tough? Sacrificed time with their kids. Walk a day in my shoes @EmmaforWycombe and tell me I’m not a working person

Great 🧵 response from @Jes_Squirrell Our work has seen biodiversity improve on the farm from 2005-2015, only to then see it stagnant as schemes/ support is messed with and funding dries or disappears. It’s shambolic. If people are bothered #publicgoods need proper recognition
This tidiness trope needs to stop, @BenGoldsmith because it distracts from the real reasons why hedgehogs are disappearing. Weather extremes are affecting their food supply (this year no slugs and worms gone deep due to drought). More on this later..1/9 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cly5…

Four years since my last “episode”, coincided with the last #pigcrisis Now broken down again with stress related eye disease hence my trip to ophthalmology today given poor vision. The strain this gov are putting on farmers is unforgivable and burdening our fabulous NHS 😔 1/3

Reading the farm cluster WhatsApp group messages. SFI 26 has exceeded expectations. It's even more of a shit show, than the shit show everyone thought it was going to be.

Seen and heard so many tales of the continuing debacle around agricultural transition and the move to support farmers for the #publicgood they do (and have done) and to incentivise/ support more sustainable approach to production and land management. It’s an utter mess @UKLabour
Just spoken to a farmer from the North York Moors about his day yesterday. He was late to the gimmer lamb sale waiting for SFI to open. He was last in the ring due to this & didn’t sell ended up. He came home, worked through the various website issues, went to submit and…

Had some lovely drinks in the fields last night — gave them a good send-off. 😞🌾 I still can’t quite believe that, after everything this Government says about supporting farming, planning was granted to take these fields away from a tenant farmer. It just doesn’t feel real!

We’ve been told to “do more with less” @UKLabour The uk farming sector has always risen to the challenge with science, technology and genetics. Only KPI’s don’t work in our sector when the mainstream #supplychain is morally bankrupt and favour cheaper, lesser standard #imports
New genetics trial’s gone a bit too well 102kg ave deadweight 😬 Proof will be in the eating (QC’s a tough gig 😋). Efficiency wise they’ve done bloody well and on a less “pokey” diet than we usually use, also with some post-weaning health challenge Some heavy lifting 🏋️ today!

Basically world trade rules ‘prevent’ this, though it makes perfect sense. Question is whether world trade rules are adhered too?
Replying to @Farmer_Tim
Here's an idea for you @UKLabour @reformparty_uk @Conservatives, why don't we have a law that simply says, anything that is not allowed to be produced in the UK, is also not allowed to be imported to the UK?

Popped to see the girl in the farrowing crate. She wasn’t aware that the uk pig sector are voluntarily transitioning to flexible farrowing so her campaign is counterproductive. Also wasn’t aware of the 1999 uk sow stall ban that halved the uk pig sector & meant more importing 1/2

Thought for today. A perfect parasite lives off its host without killing it. Something that the Agricultural supply industry and Supermarkets should consider when reviewing pricing strategies.

Ben Goldsmith conspiring to monetise the destruction of rural communities and family farms
And the pair of them argued for natural capital markets replacing or backfilling reduced/vanishing state funds Part of the evolution to NOT funding nature restoration on every farm in England So they have done grave harm to nature - almost certainly massive NET LOSS

Ah, @BenGoldsmith and @GeorgeMonbiot , a little bit of 'sheep dumping' for you to watch, newly sheared ewes going back to the fell with their lambs. (video from last year) Oh, and by the way, those trees are real and sheep do graze that Parkland.
Replying to @mattwridley
There are no shepherds anymore! That’s the problem. The sheep are dumped on the hills all year round unsupervised, unprotected, and a good number of them consequently die of natural causes each year. A return to shepherding would be a good thing.
