What does federal bureaucracy look like from the state level? Alex J. Adams had to manage 19,000 pages of compliance documents from the federal government every year when he worked in Idaho. And most of this paperwork did nothing to protect the public.
Adams, now the Assistant Secretary for the @ACFHHS, discusses the challenges states face when federal programs come with layers of bureaucracy, as well as the broader principle that is often missed in conversations around social safety-net reform: federal regulation and program quality are not necessarily the same thing.
Assistant Secretary Adams explores the ways unnecessary paperwork could be reduced while keeping programs accountable, as well as the successes territories and tribal governments have had by streamlining resources.

ACF launched A Home for Every Child to do away with box checking processes that failed to meaningfully drive progress toward better outcomes for children in foster care.
This fall, the new public A Home for Every Child data dashboard will display every state’s ratio of foster homes to children in need of care.
ACF hopes the dashboard will drive healthy competition and policy innovation that stands to transform child welfare systems across the nation.

“Social Security is fundamentally different today.”
@RepBlakeMoore says Congress needs to vote more regularly on the federal budget so it can make reforms to programs such as Social Security as demographics change and Americans live longer.
Speaking Thursday at the University of Utah’s Hinckley Institute of Politics in an event with the Sutherland Institute, Moore said Social Security is broadly supported by both parties — but lawmakers need to be able to make adjustments before the trust fund is depleted.
He says his Comprehensive Congressional Budget Act would require Congress to vote on the full federal budget each year. @SutherlandInst
