Deutsche Zentrumspartei = The Centre Party which is also known by the abbreviation Z.
Z was a major Catholic political party in Germany from its founding in 1870 until its dissolution in 1933. It was re-founded after World War II but has remained a small, marginal party focused mainly on local politics.
It emerged on 13 December 1870 when Catholic members of the Prussian House of Representatives formed a parliamentary faction to defend Catholic rights and interests in the newly unified, predominantly Protestant German Empire. The name “Zentrum” (Centre) came from the seating arrangement in parliament—Catholic deputies sat in the middle between conservatives and liberals/social democrats.
