はじめは、手を伸ばせば届きそうな距離に坂本さんがいましたが、やがて地球が遠ざかり、私たちも坂本さんと一緒に星空へ吸い込まれていきます。地球が見えなくなったとき、坂本さんはもうこの世にいないのだと感じました。

海外の映画撮影で、日本人俳優と米国のクルーの間に入って通訳をしていた頃のことを思い出しました。
日本語の「考えておきます」って、難しいんです。本当に考えるつもりなのか、相手を傷つけないように断っているのか。関東と関西でも、少しニュアンスが違ったりする気がしませんか。言葉だけではわからないので、表情や、その場の空気、それまでの交流も共に食事をしながら見ていました。
でも、空気を読むのは日本人だけじゃないんですよね。
クリント・イーストウッド監督は、遠くのテントでモニターを見ながら「アクション！」と叫ぶような人ではありませんでした。俳優のすぐ横で演技を見て、静かに「Go ahead.（どうぞ）」とあの渋い声で言うんです。
そういう現場にいると、私も自然と静かになります。俳優の呼吸や、監督が声をかける間を感じながら、その場にいる。すると、言葉だけを追っていたら気づかないことが、少しずつ見えてくるんです。#同時通訳
「検討します」を英語にするとconsider。でも、それで本当に使い方正しい？
ふなっしーの通訳でも有名な会議通訳者橋「本美穂」さんのTEDトークが心に響いた。特に見てほしいのが「検討します」の話。日本語では、本当に検討することもあれば、判断を保留したい、やんわり断りたいこともある。でも英語でなんでも consider と伝えると、相手は「じゃあ、いつ結論が出るの？」と受け取るかもしれない。
「単語は合っている。でも、意志が伝わっていない。」これ、ぼくがアメリカで仕事をしていて何度も感じること。英語を一通り勉強したら、次は「英語＝日本語」の先へ。同じ単語でも、どんな場面で、どんな気持ちで使うのか。相手の文化ではどう受け取られるのか。そこまで知ると、英語はただの言葉の置き換えではなくなる。
英語を覚えるだけでなく、相手にどう伝わるかまで学ぶ。ぼくもまだまだ勉強中。こういう「知ってる英語の奥にあるニュアンス」を、これからも一緒に学んでいこう。みなさんも「直訳したら、なんか違った」という英語があったら、どんどん共有してくださいね。

The Falcon 9 booster landing team was recognized for work that changed the future of spaceflight.
One engineer spoke about growing up poor in Mexico and thanked his parents for believing in him from the beginning. Another thanked Lars for convincing him to join SpaceX in 2012, joking that he had been promised there would soon be “fewer hard and interesting problems.”

2012年の転職前に、SpaceXの中を案内してもらった時に「そのうち量産モードになるから、面白いエンジニアリングの問題に取り組みたかったら、出来るだけ早いうちに入った方がいいよ」と言われましたが、14年経っても会社のやってることは広がる一方です笑

「地球に帰ってくるすべてのロケットは、機体だけを運んで帰ってくるわけではありません。そこには、エンジニアたちが家族と離れて費やしてきた年月も乗っています。」
多くの宇宙飛行士を輩出してきたパデュー大学で、宇宙飛行の未来を変えた仕事として、Falcon 9のブースター着陸チームが称えられました。
あるエンジニアは、メキシコの貧しい家庭で育ったことを振り返りながら、ずっと自分を信じてくれた両親に感謝。
日本人エンジニアの桑田さんは、2012年にSpaceXへ入るよう勧めてくれた同僚に感謝しつつ、「会社はもうすぐ生産段階に入って、難しくて面白い問題は減ると言われた。でも、それは完全に間違っていた」と笑いを誘いました。
再使用ロケットの成功は、技術だけでできたものではありません。長い開発の日々と、それを支えた家族や仲間の時間も一緒に積み重なっています。

Synspective's "StriX" satellites are named after the owl genus, so their dedicated missions always get fun "Owl" puns (like today's "Owlright, Owlright, Owlright" 🦉).
They're having so much fun naming them for sure. So different from the strict numbering of national launches like Artemis I, II, III, or H-IIA and H3 in Japan...
