The AI race won't be won with software alone. It will be won with steel, copper, and the skilled Americans who bring it all together. U.S. data center construction spending is up 57% over the past year — $27.3 billion in new activity — while all other nonresidential construction fell 3.5%. That growth is creating high-wage jobs for electricians and tradespeople, and training the next generation of skilled workers as a wave of retirements hits the trades. Texas can lead this buildout if we get the policy right: protect ratepayers, make sure developers pay their own way for grid and water infrastructure, and keep the jobs and the critical infrastructure here at home. 🚨 Even 60 Minutes admits it: Data centers don’t use nearly as much water as critics would have you believe. CBS News found that golf courses nationwide use more than twice as much water as data centers.

🚨Dressing up in jeans, cowboy boots, a western shirt straight from Cavender’s and a belt with a Longhorn buckle does not qualify Norah O'Donnell to opine on the character of Red Oak or any other Texas city. • Last night’s @60Minutes piece on #datacenters in #Texas spent 13 minutes chasing “backlash” and gave local supporters almost no airtime. That’s not reporting. That’s a framing choice. • All duded up in her drugstore cowboy attire, New York City resident O’Donnell declared data centers “are going to change the character of this community.” That’s opinion, not fact. Across the country, data centers have kept small towns from hollowing out. • Ellendale, North Dakota: the mayor says the town was dying until a data center arrived. Now families stay, spouses open shops, and the place has a future. • Cedar Rapids, Iowa and rural Georgia: family construction firms grow, Main Street stays open, kids don’t have to leave. • On power prices, 60 Minutes said Northern Virginia rates “surged” because of data centers. They left out the rest: Virginia still sits below the national average. Studies show large, steady data-center load helps utilities spread fixed costs and can hold rates down. • Prices have risen most places because of inflation and policy, not because a warehouse full of servers showed up. • Water? Credit where due. CBS admitted golf courses use more than twice as much water as data centers. UT Austin found Texas data centers use less than 0.5% of the state’s water. Operators are moving to closed-loop, near-zero-evaporation designs. • Two-thirds of proposed sites are rural. That’s not an invasion of farmhouses. That’s tax base, jobs, and a reason for young people to stay. Sensational claims make good TV. Honest trade-offs require facts. The claim that data centers are “draining America dry” is a myth built on selective outrage. For perspective, California almond orchards use roughly 75 times more water than all U.S. data centers combined. That does not make water conservation any less important. It means we should apply the same common-sense standard to every water user: build responsibly, use efficient cooling, prioritize reclaimed water where possible, and protect local supplies. America’s AI, cyber defense, medical breakthroughs and critical infrastructure cannot be powered by fearmongering. The good news: "When you educate the average residential consumer and voter, that actually there's a way for these data centers to bring down their electricity costs, that actually the data center operators are willing to fund grid upgrades, that actually data centers don't use a lot of water now because the water recirculates. When you actually educate them about the issue, the poll numbers change dramatically and you'll see that a majority of voters will actually support data centers."
