The USA is blessed to have successful leaders like Scott Kupor willing to go into government, for a tiny fraction of what he was making building a16z, to fight to improve how it works - and bring back merit and accountability. Great discussion! We’ll publish on @AmOptimistShow.
UATX founder Joe Lonsdale (@JTLonsdale) sat down with OPM Director Scott Kupor (@skupor) to talk about bringing merit-based hiring back to the federal government, rebuilding accountability for its two million civilian employees, and why the country's toughest problems need young talent. His message to students: your government needs you, even if just for two years. Thanks to the David Network for co-hosting.

🚨NEW: @JTLonsdale & @SquawkCNBC clash on AI and wealth inequality. Joe Lonsdale: 2030s is the disinflation decade... we're all going to be really wealthy if we don't break this. Joe Kernen: Everybody's going to get wealthier? Because only the wealthy have been getting wealthier... Joe Lonsdale: That's not true. Let's go back: 1870 to 1900, the Second Industrial Revolution, the last time productivity shot up a lot, the average American, the average working class American, was twice as wealthy in real terms within one generation... Andrew Ross Sorkin: Tell me where you land on "We've got to slow everything down, because if we don't, we could end up dying... Joe Kernen: or worse... Joe Lonsdale: or worse, the companies go bankrupt  Andrew: versus we've got to go full steam ahead. No matter what. No matter what the case. Joe Lonsdale: I love the meme where it's Dario and Sam saying, please regulate us. And Trump says, keep building, nerds.  These companies have a lot of liabilities. These companies need to slow down if they see themselves causing damage. I'm not worried about any existential risks in the near term. I 100% could see these companies accidentally causing some problems with hacking with cyber, for example. They have a responsibility to slow down themselves, and we should be holding them liable if they cause any damage. And so it makes sense that they would be very careful about that. But we were just talking... 2030s is disinflation decade. We're going to all be really wealthy if we don't break this. So don't slow down too much is my view. Joe Kernen: Go back to this again. You told me that 2030s are going to be the decade of disinflation. We're going to all get rich, and we're not going to need to raise taxes, and we're going to start growing faster. The deficit will come under control. This is going to happen? Joe Lonsdale: The AI is really good for rooting out fraud and grift in the government. It's really going to bring down health care costs dramatically. It's amazing for bringing back manufacturing. We have companies already bringing back lots of manufacturing here. That's only about to accelerate. We're at what's called a GPT-3 moment right now for robotics, right. World models, which are a new type of AI -- how do things move and interact in the real world in general terms... Joe Kernen: So this will help one of our most daunting fears of the $40 trillion and the out of control deficits we're running now, this will come under control from AI?  Joe Lonsdale: If you get productivity up to 3, 4 or 5%, what you 100% should be able to do with these things, if not significantly higher, that solves the deficit problem. This is an amazing thing for a civilization; this is the answer is to get growth higher, and it's how everyone gets wealthier, it's doing more with less. It's going to do it. Joe Kernen: Everybody's going to get wealthier? Because only the wealthy have been getting wealthier... Joe Lonsdale: That's not true. Let's go back: 1870 to1900, the Second Industrial Revolution, the last time productivity shot up a lot, the average American, the average working class American, was twice as wealthy in real terms within one generation. And that's what happens when productivity goes up. Everyone gets wealthier. We we teach economics very poorly in this country.

NEW 🚨 @JTLonsdale on @willcain blasts the push for federal AI regulators & proposes an alternative: "These companies should be held extremely liable for any damage they do. This is going to be a $2 trillion IPO — they should lose all of it if they cause hundreds of billions in damage. The right should be against regulation, but for liability." Will Cain: As you mentioned, this isn't strictly partisan. Senator Josh Hawley, Republican from Missouri, today has joined with Senator Richard Blumenthal to propose legislation that instead of METR and the effective altruists, our superheroes should be government politicians. What's going on? Why would Josh Hawley join with the likes of Bernie Sanders? Joe Lonsdale: Josh has been attacking tech for a long time. He thinks it's his ticket to be popular on the right. Listen, we should hold Big Tech accountable but we should do it in a way that's American, based on how the American founders wanted things. Woodrow Wilson, when he created this massive regulatory state, was recreating the Star Chamber that we fought against in England. We don't need Star Chambers, we don't need cronies, we don't need these regulators harassing people. What you need is liability. These companies should be held extremely liable for any damage they do. This is going to be a $2 trillion IPO. They should lose all of that if they cause hundreds of billions of dollars of damage, because they'll be liable for the damage. We should do our job passing laws, making sure it's even more clear what they're liable for, making it easier for them to be liable. We shouldn't be putting regulators in. They're just going to get captured, just going to be unaccountable. It's not how America works. The right should be against regulation, but for liability to hold companies accountable. Will: Yeah, it sounds rational. I mean, I don't trust Big Tech. I also don't trust politicians. All due respect to you, Joe, coming from the world of Big Tech, I only trust the concept of competition. And the idea is that if somebody out there is creating something so nefarious, then somebody else should come along and be able to create something better. Joe: There's an important point here, because there's Big Tech and there's Little Tech. When you're trying to start companies -- I'm involved in hundreds of new companies we're building -- big tech tries to smash us, big tech tries to capture government to smash the new innovators. Because there's always new innovators. America wins because of new innovations. What you have to do is you have to stop the big guys from smashing little guys by keeping things free, but then hold them accountable the right way, not the way that lets them capture it.

These effective altruists — this is their Messiah, this is their end of the world, this is their obsession." Jesse Waters: Am I going wrong anywhere, Joe? Joe Lonsdale: I think President Trump and you are correct. There is a coordinated campaign to make the American people afraid... There's over 50 organizations that were coordinating campaigns, doing narrative intelligence tests, testing public opinion, and spending huge amounts of money trying to scare people. It's regulatory capture, on one hand. It's our adversaries, of course, want us to stop. And I'll tell you what else it is: America has always been very religious, but they've given up Christianity in most of San Francisco. So this is like a messianic complex where this is their religion and the end of the world. And they're obsessed with it. It's weird. Jesse: So these guys don't believe in God. They're atheists, but they've created something which they believe is god like, is that what's going on here? Joe: I think that's a big part of what's happening. Listen, AI is real by the way. What you said is right, there's an industrial revolution coming that's amazing for America if we get it right. People who hate America want to stop it. But yes, America has always... we were founded by kind of extreme Puritans, right? We've always been very, very religious. We've had these awakenings. And I think this is a form of what happens if you give up religion is you want to have some kind of messianic complex, some kind of big thing to believe in. And these effective altruists, this is their Messiah and this is their end of the world and this is their obsession. So I think it is a little bit unhealthy in terms of the spiritual life in San Francisco that's broken. Jesse: So the chip guy, who runs Nvidia, he's basically saying it's not true. There is no even 10% chance of human extinction from AI. Do you believe that?  Joe: Yeah, I believe that. I think there's definitely risks where, for example, if the I guess if people use it for viral synthesis and a DNA synthesis site, they could cause a lot of deaths. I think there's going to be lots of hacking that happens thanks to AI being used by people. I think there's other risks that we can't yet understand for how authoritarians could use this... to trick the populace by being really good at knowing how to appeal to huge numbers of people about horrible things. So there's lots of risks, and there's lots of upside. But I think these doomer narratives are ridiculous. And I think we should be embracing the industrial revolution, and we should be pushing back on these NGOs. By the way, the same thing they did last time with climate change, with killer bees... These guys want power. They want money. We shouldn't buy it. Jesse: Killer bees. I forgot about that one. So you're saying you could use it to control the population, but, I mean, we could also use it to root out corruption in the federal government. Are Democrats kind of scared that that I could be used against them? Joe: I think that's exactly right. I think people don't realize how much AI is on the side of liberty, how much is anti-corruption. Scott Bessent's doing a great job as Treasury Secretary and changing the rules so we can look through things, we can start using AI. There's investigative journalists already getting going, finding all sorts of fraud in HHS that only AI could have found because there's so much to look through. And so, yes, I think it's going to be a very positive thing for society. It's going to root out all that money that they're stealing and moving around to their NGOs, and they don't want that happening. I think you're right about that.

"It's like Oppenheimer when he had this hubristic awe of his own creation... People get mad at me for saying this, but this is actually the way that a lot of these folks think about it: even a tiny probability of doom multiplied by negative infinity utils equals negative infinity utils." @Brendan_McCord & @JTLonsdale explain the roots of effective altruism. Joe Lonsdale: What are the doomsayers first of all? Brendan McCord: That's the intellectual incumbent, I would say, that's the most common dominant philosophy in the practitioner community. And it's three philosophies in a trench coat, but they're all very entangled. One is effective altruism, one is rationalism, one is long-termism... you can kind of put them together and say those are like the doomsayers. And the gist of it is that AI could pose a risk to humanity and we should pause. It's kind of like Oppenheimer when he had this, you know, hubristic awe of his own creation. Or you could say like a tragic kind of Prometheianism where like we got fire from the gods and now we regret it or something like this... People get mad at me for saying this, but this is actually the way that a lot of these folks think about it: even a tiny probability of doom, multiplied by negative infinity utils equals negative infinity utils.

🚨NEW: Our adversaries secretly funded the anti-fracking & anti-nuclear movements. Now @JTLonsdale asks: Who's funding the outrage about Flock? And of all the surveillance cameras, why is the outrage only directed at the ones arresting criminals and illegal aliens? Joe Lonsdale: I've been working on this for 25 years... I've been trying to make the government competent in the areas that I touch and trying to "watch the watchers."  You can go back and see me talk about "watching the watchers" for a very long time now. Now, what what bothers me about about this... there are the legitimate things you can argue about, and then there's the psyops from the left... We're in Texas here today. I'm a proud Texan now for six years. I want to give you one other example of a psyop.... You guys may remember we heard a lot about how bad fracking was. This is a big, big deal. It's now a known fact -- it's not conspiracy -- it's a known fact that our adversaries saw how good fracking was, and how bad it would be for them. And Russia especially spent an insane amount of money trying to stop us from doing fracking... Thank goodness Texans were bold and said, these psyops are bullshit, I'm not gonna listen to them. So my question is, so we have lots of types of cameras that watch us. We have license plate reader cameras, we have parking cameras, and we have Flocks. And I'm not involved in Flock at all. I think they've done a shitty job on some of the messaging here, but isn't it a little suspicious to you as well that no one's attacking the other cameras? No one's attacking the cameras that are giving us speeding tickets, that are watching other parts of our society. But everyone, after DSA spends insane amounts of money, message tests, the far left figures out how to get the right to agree with them, and then they go after the things that are arresting criminals. And those are the only ones that everyone on the populist right is protesting... Isn't that a little bit silly? Shouldn't it be that we're protesting all of them or none of them? Are we kind of falling for the left here? Is there something where we shouldn't be going along with the psyop?
🚨NEW: Joe Lonsdale unloads on data center myths at RNC midterm debate. @JTLonsdale: Are you willing to admit the water thing is fake about data centers? Almonds use 1.5 trillion gallons a year. Data centers is 22 billion. Golf uses 25 times as much water. There's just fake attacks... I responsibly agree with you on our civilization needing to keep its core values and its faith and not have our kids disrupted by these things. I also think it's responsible for more of the populace to say, guys, this is bullshit. Because what's happening here is there's a seam in our civilization — driven by anxiety, by real worries that are legitimate. But that seam is being exploited by bad actors... There are psyops driven by China and Iran that push this stuff, and it will lead us to idiot policy... the same way Russia was caught funding anti-fracking campaigns. They find these seams, they try to get us to do dumb things so they can beat us. And we are not going to let them beat us.

NEW: @JTLonsdale at @ApplyToForum debate at RNC midterms takes on right-wing doomers and calls for "big daddy government" to smother AI and data centers. Joe Allen: However flawed it is, at least the desire to bring these guys [Big Tech / AI labs] under control is best met, however flawed it is, through big daddy government. Joe Lonsdale: I appreciate that perspective, that you're very negative on it. Overall, I think you're attributing a little too much to like the ChatGPT consumer interaction and not enough to the way in which industry is using AI to bring back manufacturing, to solve problems, to raise productivity. The only way we all get wealthier is raising productivity. We're already seeing very clearly signs that it has definitely led to job growth, not job destruction. I agree with you -- there are some people running some of these tech companies who seem to have this doomer PR, which as far as I can tell, is retarded. And if you want to punish them for that, I kind of empathize with you... But don't let them trick you. Because what a lot of them want is a big regulatory apparatus that they can capture. Because if you do create something at the federal level, you can bet the guys with trillions of dollars in their pockets can hire a thousand people that are going to find ways to capture that and use it against the rest of us. We have to be very careful, not just to do what the left wants and give the government all this power, which then will get captured, and then we're all screwed. We are the greatest nation on earth, in my opinion, in large part because of our freedom and our property rights and our checks on government power, our checks on corporate power as well. And because of our innovation sector -- it's tied to all of that. If you're on the left, you're worried about the companies. If you're on the right, you're more worried about government ... I think we're really screwed when the companies and the governments work together ...when those guys get together and come after us. That is what they want. So let's just be really, really careful. Whatever we put in place prioritizes competence, and it's not something they're going to be able to capture and use against us.

Today, Covenant is emerging from stealth and introducing Anthem: a heavy-payload deep precision strike capability designed for mass production, with deliveries beginning in the thousands in 2027. We’ve raised $250 million, flown Anthem in more than 200 tests, and secured approximately $150 million in orders, including contracts with the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy, and key international allies. We’re building Anthem at our 105,000-square-foot production facility in Dallas, alongside factories in Germany and Israel. Covenant is backed by @a16z, @foundersfund, @Lux_Capital, @lightspeedvp, @8vc, @aleph, and @AltimeterCap. Deep precision strike is the biggest gap in the arsenal of the West, and we spent the last two years building Anthem to fill it. Now we deliver at scale.
