Canada’s support for a two-state solution is longstanding and resolute. Today, alongside the United Kingdom, France, and Saudi Arabia, we brought partners together at the UN to discuss how we can create the conditions for a lasting peace — where Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in safety and dignity.

Palestinians are facing immense humanitarian need. Prime Minister @MarkJCarney announced $100 million in new Canadian assistance, including $80 million for humanitarian aid to reach people who urgently need food, health care and essential services. Canada is also investing in Palestinian institutions and security as we work toward a durable two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace and security. This is part of our responsibility to address immediate needs and support the foundations for lasting peace.

It’s back-to-school for us too on Parliament Hill today! We’re excited to continue our work building Canada Strong for all.

Last night, on the holiest night of the Jewish calendar, a shooting took place outside the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville.   A police officer was shot and the community has been left shaken.   Jewish people must be able to worship safely. To live free, open, proud Jewish lives. Canada’s government will do everything in our power to support law enforcement in ensuring that the perpetrator is held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.   My thoughts are with the injured officer and his family, and the entire Jewish community.

Anyone who works in the "deal space" knows there are two kinds of dealmakers: openers and closers. Openers are zero-to-one people. They see non obvious opportunities and trailblaze a path to find momentum. They are strategic, imaginative, impatient and comfortable with ambiguity. They're naturally expansionist and have what Keats called "negative capability." Closers are very, very different. They turn possible into probable and then inevitable. They are patient, disciplined and process-oriented. They follow up, resolve contradictions, manage details and steadily reduce ambiguity. Few people have both. The opener gets bored quickly, . the closer is paralyzed by options.
