GSAI’s Women’s Weekly Dose this week focused on the topic “BEYOND REPRESENTATION: How Can Women Turn Their Voices into Institutional Change?” It was indeed Insightful and educational. Speaking on GSAI's Women's Weekly Dose, Rafsanjani challenged the structures that continue to limit women’s political participation, from excessive campaign costs and party-level exclusion to electoral violence, weak institutional accountability, and inadequate access to decision-making. His message was clear: women do not need symbolic seats; they need real authority, equal opportunities, institutional protection, and the power to shape policies and influence national priorities. Rafsanjani called for political party reforms, meaningful financial access, stronger protection against electoral violence, gender-disaggregated electoral data, leadership development, and sustained collaboration among government, civil society, the media, and grassroots movements. As Nigeria looks towards 2027 and beyond, the task is not merely to increase women’s presence in leadership. It is to dismantle the barriers that prevent their voices from translating into measurable institutional change. At Gender Strategy Advancement International (GSAI), we believe that inclusion must be reflected in who makes decisions, how resources are allocated, whose priorities shape public policy, and whether institutions are held accountable. The goal is not representation for appearance. It is representation with influence, leadership with accountability, and inclusion that transforms institutions. Missed the conversation? Nigeria ranks among the lowest in the world for women’s political representation at less than 5%. The Reserved Seats Bill could change that by ensuring women have guaranteed representation in parliament. But can legislation alone shift deeply rooted power structures? Join our distinguished panelists — @akinalabi, @osasuigbinedion, @Talk2Adaora — as we debate what inclusion truly means for Nigeria’s democracy.
Despite making up nearly half of Nigeria’s population, women occupy less than 5% of elective seats across the country. The Reserved Seats for Women Bill seeks to change that by guaranteeing a minimum number of seats for women in the national and state assemblies. But is Nigeria ready for such a shift? Will it empower women or entrench tokenism? Join our panelists @akinalabi, @osasuigbinedion and @Talk2Adaora unpack the politics, promise, and pushback around gender representation. twitter.com/i/spaces/1DXxyWo…

On this week's episode of our women weekly dose, we'll be discussing the rising trend of domestic violence against women and girls in Nigeria as a deeply concerning issue. Despite efforts to address gender-based violence, cases continue to escalate, highlighting the urgent need for more robust legal frameworks, awareness campaigns, and support systems for survivors. Cultural norms and systemic inequalities often exacerbate the problem, leaving many women and girls vulnerable and without recourse. Addressing this trend requires a coordinated effort from government agencies, civil society, and communities to create a safer and more equitable environment for all. #EndDomesticViolence #StopAbuseNigeria #ProtectNigerianWomen #BreakTheSilenceNG Join the discussion tomorrow on twitter using the link below x.com/i/spaces/1jMKgBNlvRPxL PLATFORM : TWITTER DATE : THURSDAY 18TH JULY 2024 TIME : 6PM HANDLE : @Genderstrategy
