#OTD 1996 the Thames Path National Trail officially opened at the Thames Barrier in Greenwich. Since then thousands of people follow the National Trail's acorn icon on wooden and metal fingerposts along the 185.2 mile route from the source of the River Thames to the sea in London. Acorn-shaped batons made from two oak fingerposts featured in the Thames Path Relay #thamespath30

15th September 1940 saw one of the worst Blitz bombing nights in London in the Battle of Britain. These air raids had a devastating effect on London. They are now commemorated in the bronze sculpture: the Battle of Britain Monument on Victoria Embankment, on the Thames Path National Trail in Westminster 1/2 🧵

The Battle of Britain took place between July and October 1940. 'The Few' who flew the Spitfires and Hurricanes came from Commonwealth nations and occupied European countries. They were supported by vast numbers of engineers, ammunition workers, observers, anti-aircraft gunners, searchlight operators, and Women's Auxiliary Airforce plotters. All of them can be seen, and touched, in the dramatic Battle of Britain Monument created by sculptor Paul Day. #BattleofBritainDay @I_W_M
