HAPPENING NOW IN RULINDO DISTRICT: FARMERS COME TOGETHER TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE AND CELEBRATE DISTRICT AGRICULTURE PROGRESS
📍 Buyoga Sector,
@rulindodistrict | October 27, 2026
How can farmers accelerate their development? By sharing experiences, learning from one another (farmers to farmers), and building on the knowledge gained through their agricultural journey.
Today, farmers from the Muyanza site in Buyoga Sector, Rulindo District, are coming together under the Sustainable Agricultural Intensification and Food Security Project Phase II (SAIP II) to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and reflect on the progress made in agricultural production and livelihoods.
Implemented through the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), under the Single Project Implementation Unit (SPIU), and funded Global Agriculture
and Food Security Program (GAFSP)
through the World Bank Group’s IDA, SAIP II aims to increase agricultural production, connect farmers to markets, and strengthen food security. The project began its activities in December 2018, initially focusing on improving productivity in the Muyanza command area developed under the Land Husbandry, Water Harvesting and Hillside Irrigation (LWH) project.
Today’s knowledge-sharing event led by Theoneste RUGERINYANGE, vise mayor in charge of economic development, brings together cooperative representatives, farmer groups, individual farmers, local leaders, and to discuss achievements, exchange practical lessons, and explore opportunities to improve farming practices and strengthen agricultural value chains.
Participating cooperatives include DUKUNDUMURIMO, KORA UKIRE, KIMUYANZA, KOTEMURU, and MUGREF, whose members contribute to agricultural development in the Muyanza site.
Beyond knowledge exchange, the event highlights the importance of irrigation in increasing agricultural productivity. The Muyanza site covers approximately 2,550 hectares, including 1,100 hectares designated for irrigation, of which 655 hectares are currently irrigated. The scheme supports the production of major crops, including maize, beans, Irish potatoes, vegetables, and fruits.
The project’s reported production demonstrate encouraging progress. Irish potato yields increased from 12 tonnes per hectare in 2024A to 16 tonnes per hectare in 2026B, while maize yields rose from 3.1 to 3.4 tonnes per hectare over the same period. These results highlight the potential of agricultural intensification and the importance of continued investment in productive farming systems.
Through farmer training, demonstration plots, market linkages, irrigation support, and postharvest interventions, SAIP II seeks to help farming communities improve productivity and make agriculture more commercially viable.
Knowledge sharing is more than exchanging information; it is about turning experience into opportunity. When farmers share what works, discuss the challenges they face, and learn from each other’s successes, they help build stronger cooperatives, more resilient livelihoods, and a more food-secure future.
