With the new school year underway, millions of American parents are gearing up to cheer on their kids in sports — not necessarily for their school’s team, but for one of the thousands of travel or club teams that have cropped up across the country.
Roughly 5 million kids are competing on these private teams, and many benefit from that participation, including some who get college scholarships.
But youth travel sports also come with increasing costs and challenges. Those trade-offs and concerns are getting more attention.

We thank Russia for working with Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to release Mr. Gilman and allowing him to receive the necessary medical treatment here in the United States.
While we appreciate this positive step, we are still seeking the immediate return of all other unjustly detained Americans, including wrongful detainee Stephen Hubbard. The President will not stop until all unjustly detained Americans are home.

The family of a U.S. Marine veteran imprisoned in Russia says his health is rapidly deteriorating and that he may be on the brink of death. They are pleading for his release.
Robert Gilman was first arrested in Russia in 2022 for allegedly hitting a Russian police officer. Gilman was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison, but that sentence has since been extended to a decade.

The PBS family is mourning the passing of one of its own, Sylvia Bugg.
She most recently served as chief programming executive and general manager for general audience programming.
In a statement, @PBS CEO Paula Kerger said Bugg helped shape the programming "that defines our service to the American people."
Kerger added that Bugg "will be gratefully remembered for her commitment to ensuring public media's programming reflects a broad range of voices and perspectives."
Bugg was a dedicated and passionate leader, and a staunch supporter of our team at the News Hour.
She died unexpectedly over the weekend at the age of 55.
