H13 filters are typically used in laminar-flow air purification equipment—more precisely, laminar-flow supply devices such as FFUs and laminar-flow hoods. Such equipment does not rely on recirculating filtration; instead, it delivers a single pass of extremely clean air to create a localized clean zone. It is mainly used in cleanrooms, hospital operating rooms, pharmaceutical production lines, and biosafety laboratories. For residential air purifiers that use recirculating filtration, H13 filters are unsuitable because their high resistance actually reduces CADR. Unfortunately, after more than a decade of commercial marketing, the idea that “the higher the filter rating, the better” has become deeply ingrained in consumers’ minds. Through repeated testing, I have found that EPA11–12 filters can provide the highest CADR in most air purifiers—though this also depends to some extent on the fan’s airflow-versus-resistance curve.
