I know it's really enjoyable to dunk on Congress, but we have curtailed legislative branch resources for decades and crippled its institutional capacity. If we want better results we need to change course.
Today I learned that House subcommittees used to have 10-15 staff and be much more independent to drive policy.

Do you feel adequately represented? Me neither.
Congress needs more resources to do that, but most of all it needs to let ALL members really truly actually deliberate on substantive things.
I know it's really enjoyable to dunk on Congress, but we have curtailed legislative branch resources for decades and crippled its institutional capacity. If we want better results we need to change course.

Good news for Indiana is that our 16% turnout rate is considerably higher than last cycle.
Bad news is that it is still among the lowest in the nation. This is especially noteworthy, given the high-profile primaries we had in 7 of our Senate districts.

I worked for two pretty effective senators. I never saw either yell at a staff member. One did yell at the postmaster general once and jab a pen in his direction. Thatās about as aggressive as I ever saw.
But there was famous office lore of the boss and a staffer leaving a meeting with another senator who dressed down their staffer pretty harshly. When my boss and colleague left, the boss, who had a deserved reputation for humility, uncharacteristically turned to my colleague and said āI bet youāre glad you were on my side of the table today.ā

I too think too many in the staffer class suffer from main character syndrome.
But they also might feel like they have less to complain about if we didnāt pay them paltry wages to work and live in one of the most expensive cities in the country.

So these are actually scorch marks from the burning of the Capitol in 1814. Sandstone is sedimentary and has plenty of iron deposits. These exploded during the fire, making pock marks (seen especially around the Old Supreme Court Chamber)
Attention Capitol Hill interns and new Congressional staffers giving tours: these are not bullet holes
