Rod, as a former Cornyn guy, this is false. Paxton was already well ahead in tracking polls. Trump endorsed him very late. He would've won without it, albeit by a closer margin than 28 points. Texas chose and Trump just stamped his approval.

We know Cornyn wants Paxton to lose because he could have just said, “Of course we want to hold this seat, but there’s only so much money.” He didn’t. What I think he’s getting wrong is the assumption that a Paxton loss drives sorrowful Texas Republicans back to his team.
This is what makes me skeptical about the anonymous “longtime Texas GOP officials” running to the media to predict doom. It’s pretty clear Cornyn and his allies want Paxton to lose.
