You watch the clips, you study what he likes to do and you tell yourself, ‘Okay, don’t let him come inside onto his right foot.’ Then the game starts and the first time I show him outside, he goes outside. So next time I’m thinking, ‘Fine, I know now.’ I protect the outside and he comes inside. After a while I stopped trying to guess. I was just waiting for Marcus to tell me which way we were going. That’s probably the most difficult game I’ve had against a winger. Because it wasn’t one trick you could eventually understand. He’d slow down, accelerate, come inside, go outside. Sometimes I thought I’d defended the first movement well and then realised there was apparently a second one. At one point somebody from the bench was shouting instructions to me. I couldn’t even hear exactly what they were saying, but I remember thinking, ‘If you know which way he’s going, please come down here and tell me.’ People can analyse defending afterwards and say I should’ve shown him this way or that way. I tried both ways. He accepted both invitations. Then after the game somebody told me Manchester United were considering selling him not long ago. I said, ‘Selling him where?’ Because after spending 70 minutes trying to keep Marcus Rashford in one place, the last thing I wanted to hear was that Manchester United nearly sent him somewhere else to do this every week.”
