Thirty-three years ago, African governments were told they were not capable. They built @Afreximbank anyway: a bank owned by Africans, governed by Africans and answerable to Africans. At the Alamein Africa Forum, I called on our leaders to stand behind the institution they created. Ownership carries the responsibility to keep capitalising our institutions, honour the treaties that protect them and defend them collectively. Our shareholders have demonstrated that commitment, again and again, in cash, often when their own budgets were under pressure. Their support has enabled us to keep financing African economies when others withdrew. When Africa needs its bank, its bank must be there. That record deserves to be assessed accurately. Credit ratings should measure substance, not conformity. I thank President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Government of Egypt for hosting us and for standing with Afreximbank since its earliest years. Egypt gave this Bank a home when it was untested and widely doubted. We must now build on what we have created: African institutions that can mobilise African savings, finance African trade and invest in African businesses and infrastructure at the scale our continent requires. When the world retreats, Africa must not. Watch my address in full: youtu.be/am73EDC1QbU

This post should have a minimum of 10 million views, and needs to be forwarded to every early to mid career professional (senior ones who don’t know this are already lost), every job hunter, every university student across Nigeria. More people should speak on this topic.
Ownership is not a feeling. It's a decision. Most people treat their standards as a response to their environment performing when conditions are good, pulling back when they're not. I've built my entire career on the opposite principle.

Ownership Is Not a Feeling. It's a Decision.

There is a version of Sunday evening I remember very clearly. The shower would be running. I would be standing under it. And I would be crying quietly, deliberately, making sure the sound of the water

Afreximbank wins Corporate Influencer at the World Media Awards 2026. Our Impact Stories campaign, entered by @CNN , has been recognised at the World Media Awards 2026 for its approach to telling the story of Africa’s economic transformation through real people, businesses and communities across both seasons of the series. The campaign set out to make the impact of Afreximbank’s work more visible and accessible, moving beyond corporate messaging to show what financing can mean on the ground. Across the two seasons, Impact Stories brought together stories from different industries and markets, connecting three dimensions of development: the people whose lives are changing, the businesses growing, and the wider trade and economic opportunities being created. From on-site storytelling and beneficiary voices to evidence-led narratives and high-quality documentary production, the series brought Afreximbank’s impact to life for audiences across Africa and around the world. We are proud to receive this recognition alongside our partners at CNN, and even more proud of the stories behind it. Two seasons. Real stories. One continent. One vision. #Afreximbank #WorldMediaAwards #ImpactStories #CorporateInfluencer #AfricanTrade #Industrialisation #Africa #EconomicTransformation #CNN

Keeping everyone (including Africans) completely ignorant about Africa and the central role it plays in the economic and natural world is a core feature of Europeanised education, not a bug. You're not supposed to know that the DRC is the most resource-rich country in the world, with an estimated $24 trillion sitting under its soil. You're not supposed to know that the rise of "western civilisation" from the 15th century on was entirely made possible by European contact with Africa, and that the resources and labour extracted from coastal West Africa from 1492 onwards are the entire reason why both American continents exist in their current form. You're not supposed to know that both WW1 and WW2 were essentially wars fought over the right to African colonial domination and expansion, and that even the uranium that was used in "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki came from Shinkolobwe uranium mine in eastern DRC. You're not supposed to know that the reason the country of France exists in its current form is because tens of thousands of conscripted West African soldiers fought and won against the Nazis in Europe, and the French thereafter shipped them back to West Africa and massacred them at Camp Thiaroye in Senegal to avoid paying them their due wages. You're not supposed to know that there was nothing cold about the so-called Cold War, because the vast majority of the hot theaters it was physically fought in were on the continent of Africa. (Zimbabwe, DRC, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Angola, Eritrea, Zambia etc). You're not supposed to know that the ongoing Ukraine war and the war in the Sahel are in fact the same conflict being fought by the same 2 sides, and that the reason France is desperately pushing funding and arms to Ukraine even as it falls into internal crisis is that Ukraine is acting as its proxy army in West Africa, as it tries to regain its lost colonial territories there, especially Niger where the cheap yellowcake uranium for its famously cheap nuclear energy used to come from before the 2023 revolution. You're definitely not supposed to know that the entire global economy and system of trade as you know it is built on ruthless extraction from Africa and ensuring that Africa does not control anything it exports. You're not supposed to know that "Italian leather" doesn't come from Italy - it comes from Kano, Nigeria. You're not supposed to know that "Swiss chocolate" does not exist because cocoa does not grow anywhere in Switzerland or Europe - it comes from Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria. You're not supposed to know that Israel and the UAE control the global diamond and gold markets even though Israel has no diamond mine and the UAE has zero gold mines, because both resources are literally being stolen from the DRC and Sudan on an industrial basis. You're basically not supposed to understand that the entire geopolitical world as you know it, rests entirely on extraction from Africa, poverty of Africans, and your own ignorance about where everything you use comes from. Completely deliberate 500+ year-old feature, not accidental bug.
How did school teach us about the Amazon so much & never once mention the Congo Basin? It's the world's largest tropical carbon sink. The planet is literally breathing through it & nobody thought we should know 😳

Africa’s young innovators are not waiting for the future. They are building it. At the 3rd Presidential African Youth in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Competition (AYAIR) Final Awards Ceremony during the Alamein Africa Forum 2026, Afreximbank Group Chief Economist and Managing Director, Research, Dr. Yemi Kale, highlighted the need to build the financing, infrastructure and market access that can turn African ideas into products, businesses and jobs. Through the Africa Research and Innovation Hub (ARIH), Afreximbank, together with the @_AfricanUnion Union Commission and the @AfCFTA , is helping shorten the journey from African research and innovation to African markets. The results are already emerging. Young innovators across Africa are applying AI and technology to healthcare, agriculture, disability inclusion, diagnostics and environmental challenges, turning promising ideas into practical solutions with commercial potential. For the third edition of AYAIR, Afreximbank has stepped up as Diamond Strategic Partner with a US$120,000 commitment, with the competition now formally integrated into ARIH’s innovation pipeline and expanded to young Global Africans, including those in the diaspora. The next step is clear: move African innovation from the periphery to the centre by connecting young innovators to capital, mentorship, intellectual property protection and markets. The future of African innovation is already being built. Our responsibility is to help it scale. #Afreximbank #AYAIR2026 #ARIH #AfricanInnovation #AI #Robotics #YouthInnovation #AfricanYouth #Technology #AlameinAfricaForum #Innovation

Kampala needs more open spaces (indeed, more parks and squares) rather than less. We don't lack sites for malls, hotels, and apartments. Kampala, especially the metropolitan areas, are basically virgin. The heart of the city needs to breathe, and City Square (I don't like the name Constitutional Square - another space should have been created to commemorate the 1995 Constitution) facilitates that much needed breath. Let's save the CITY SQUARE! CPM

When the world retreats, Africa must not. Opening the Alamein Africa Forum 2026 in New Alamein, Egypt, Dr. @GeorgeElombi, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, called for stronger African ownership of the institutions built to finance the continent's future. Afreximbank was created during Africa's debt crisis in 1993 to act when others hesitate. That mandate has remained constant - trom supporting trade and vaccine procurement during COVID-19 and deploying US$4 billion during the Ukraine-related food and energy crisis, to approving a US$10 billion Gulf Crisis Response Programme this year. Today, shareholders' funds stand at almost US$9 billion, backed by African shareholders who have continued to inject capital even during periods of fiscal pressure. Africa must capitalise and defend its institutions, mobilise more of its own resources and build a financial architecture capable of financing African trade, businesses and intrastructure at scale. As Dr. Elombi put it: "We are not asking to be judged kindly. We are asking to be judged accurately." Thirty-three years on, the mandate remains as relevant as ever - when Africa needs its Bank, its Bank must be there.
