THE SNL SKETCH THAT NORM MACDONALD ADMITTED HE “STOLE” Before Will Ferrell was screaming at Sean Connery, before “Turd Ferguson” became part of SNL history, Celebrity Jeopardy! began with Norm Macdonald watching another comedy show. Macdonald was a huge fan of SCTV. One sketch in particular, “Half-Wits,” featured Eugene Levy playing an increasingly frustrated game-show host surrounded by contestants who were spectacularly stupid. Years later, Macdonald noticed something about the real Celebrity Jeopardy!: the questions were noticeably easier than those on the regular show. He immediately saw the comedy. But there was a problem. The basic idea was already very close to “Half-Wits.” So Macdonald didn't simply take it. When Martin Short—an SCTV veteran—hosted SNL in December 1996, Macdonald asked him who had written the original sketch. The answer was Eugene Levy. Macdonald then contacted Levy and explained what he wanted to do. He got permission. That small act of professional courtesy eventually produced one of the most recognizable recurring sketches in SNL history. But Macdonald didn't just reproduce “Half-Wits.” He changed the engine. Instead of ordinary idiots competing on a quiz show, the contestants would be celebrities. And Macdonald had one particular celebrity in mind for himself: Burt Reynolds. What happened next would turn a borrowed premise into something audiences remembered for decades.
