An Iranian-American student at Michigan stood up, named the IRGC, named the hunt for his cousin over a hijab, and asked Abdul El-Sayed a simple question: do you stand with us? El-Sayed answered like a man protecting a talking point. Sanctions hurt civilians. Regime-change wars serve corporate interests. Freedom and democracy for all people, including Iranians. Then he sat back down on the same moral furniture he never uses for Israel. That is the tell to look for among leftists. For Palestinians he has a prosecutor’s voice: genocide, embargo, isolate, intervene, punish Israel (which is an ally of United States). For Iranians he has a greeting-card. He will not say IRGC. He will not say Islamic Republic. He will not match the heat he aims at Jerusalem with a single hard sentence about the people who shot innocent Iranians in the street in January or hanged them since. He warns that American pressure “only hurts civilians.” The civilians in question were already being hunted by the IRGC before a single new sanction was printed. The student said it to his face: we are dying. El-Sayed converted a massacre into a lecture about oil and contractors. This is not anti-war consistency. It is a caste system of victims. One file gets rallies, resolutions, and a demand that United States break an ally. The other file gets “I wish you freedom” and a warning not to touch the regime that produces the bodies. If the death toll in January had carried a Palestinian flag, he would have called it a crime against humanity before the blood dried. Because it was Iranian, it became a cautionary tale about American hubris. The left’s selective outrage is not a mystery anymore. It is a hierarchy. Iranians are expected to overthrow a theocracy unarmed and with slogans while he treats any outside pressure as imperialism. Israel is expected to be sanctioned into the ground. Same campus. Same microphone. Two moral codes. If you cannot condemn the IRGC as plainly as you condemn Israel, you do not stand with freedom. You stand with the audience that claps for one pile of dead and looks away from the other.

Alas, the question was not about U.S. military interventions, sanctions, or regime-change wars. It was whether he would condemn the regime.
