In 2014, former flight attendant Dawn Michelle Hunt received an email saying she had won a contest. The prize was a free international trip.
It was a scam.
The trip took her to Hong Kong and then to China, where the scammers treated her like a winner.
They gave her gifts, including purses and a new suitcase, and convinced Michelle to take it with her when she left the country.
At the airport, police searched her luggage and found about 4.5 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside.
Her family says she had no idea the drugs were there, and that the scammers had used her as a drug mule.
In 2017, a Chinese court sentenced her to death. The sentence was later reduced to life in prison.
Before she was sentenced, she spent three years in a detention center. She later told her father that guards there raped her.
When her brother visited in 2024, Michelle had lost a lot of weight, and her hair had turned completely gray.
Doctors had also found tumors in her uterus and ovaries that could be cancer, but she refused treatment because she didn't trust the prison.
More than a decade later, she remains imprisoned. Her father died in January 2026, still waiting for his daughter to come home.
