Italy’s story is a warning.
In the 1990s, Finmeccanica, a powerful instrument of technological development, was transformed through privatisation and militarisation into Leonardo, a military contractor.
Many of the benefits of a diverse civilian manufacturing sector were lost.

The transformation of Finmeccanica is a lesson for the present.
Europe needs an industrial strategy that builds a diversified and resilient economy — not one that turns civilian capacity towards war production.
