D'Anton Lynn called USC players on his side of the ball "stupid" to USC recruits on the way out Don't forgive, don't forget ✌🏻
LYNN KNOWS WHAT’S COMING: Penn State DC D’Anton Lynn knows what awaits when the Nittany Lions take on #USC. Lynn faced Lincoln Riley in 2023 as UCLA’s DC, helping lead the Bruins to a 38-20 win over the Trojans — a performance that ultimately helped earn him a job offer from Riley at USC. Now, Lynn is on the opposite sideline. “They’re gonna move the ball. They’re gonna have plays.” Lynn said. His message to Penn State: make USC drive the field and don’t give up explosive plays. Lynn knows Riley’s offense. Now he gets another shot at it. 📸: Keith Birmingham, Pasadena Star-News/ SCNG

RILEY DEFENDS HIS DECISION: #USC HC Lincoln Riley was asked what gives him confidence that hiring Gary Patterson was the right decision. Riley pointed to Patterson’s longevity, defensive expertise, Hall of Fame résumé, trust and competitive fire as reasons he continues to believe in his defensive coordinator. “He’s one of the best coaches of our generation in college football history. One of the best defensive minds in college football history. A College Football Hall of Famer. Somebody I trust, somebody who I know, whose competitive fire burns as hot as anyone out there.” The message from Riley is clear: He fully believes in Gary Patterson. 📸: Ronaldo Bolanos

PENALTY PROBLEM: #USC HC Lincoln Riley believes the Trojans had opportunities to break the game open against Washington, but penalties repeatedly got in the way. Riley felt USC had a solid offensive rhythm in the first half and played well enough to score around 30 points, but costly penalties continually set the Trojans back. “We completely dismantled drives with penalties. We've got to do a whole lot better with that.” Riley called the offensive performance unacceptable and acknowledged that USC had opportunities to create separation. The message is clear: Penalties need to be cleaned up. 📸: Ronaldo Bolaños

5 THINGS WE LEARNED: The Trojans escaped Washington 25-21 on Saturday, overcoming an 11-point second-half deficit to improve to 5-1. Here are five things we learned from #USC’s bounce-back victory: THIS TEAM HAS RESILIENCE. Down 21-10 in the third quarter, USC could have folded. Instead, the Trojans scored the final 15 points of the game and found a way to win despite not playing their cleanest football. Riley called it a “gutsy win” that could provide the team with momentum. USC’S DEFENSE CAN WIN GAMES. After getting exposed against Oregon, the defense responded when it mattered most. USC held Washington scoreless in the fourth quarter and made the biggest plays down the stretch. The pass rush was especially impressive, producing four sacks, five tackles for loss and two QB hits. JAHKEEM STEWART IS A DIFFERENCE-MAKER. Stewart continuously helped collapse the pocket, recovered Elijah Newby’s strip-sack and took it 48 yards to the house for the go-ahead touchdown. USC needs that kind of disruptive presence from him and its defensive front every week. DISCIPLINE IS STILL A MAJOR PROBLEM. The win doesn’t erase the issues. USC committed costly penalties, including alignment penalties and dead-ball personal fouls. Riley himself called the penalties “massive” and said the Trojans have to do a much better job. USC HAS A CHANCE TO BUILD SOMETHING. At 5-1, the Trojans are still very much in the mix, but the schedule is about to get serious. Next up: Penn State at Beaver Stadium in the White Out. Then come Wisconsin, Ohio State, Indiana and UCLA later in the season. Washington was a must-win. Now USC has to prove it wasn’t just a one-week response. 📸: Icon Sportswire

THIS WIN CAN BE A SPARK: Following #USC’s 25-21 victory over Washington, Lincoln Riley believes this type of gritty win could be exactly what the Trojans needed to turn the season around. Riley pointed to the value of winning even when you don’t play your best: “Sometimes these gutsy wins when you maybe don’t have quite your A game, they can sometimes do something for you, maybe that even a blowout win can’t do.” Riley believes USC can carry that momentum forward, especially with the opportunity to get players healthy and continue seeing young players make major contributions. “We knew if we could right the ship right here in this middle part of the season, that we’d give ourselves a good damn chance. So we did it tonight, and hopefully we can do it again.” USC is 5-1. The ship has been steadied. Now it’s about keeping the momentum going. 📸: MediaNews Group/Orange County Register

USC ANSWERS THE CALL: #USC’s defense played a much-improved game, coming up with several key stops and making big plays when the Trojans needed them most. USC DE Luke Wafle spoke about the importance of bouncing back, especially after the loss: “The bounce-back is huge for us, especially as a defense. We wanted to play a lot better collectively. It meant a lot to us, and we got one under the belt, so we can keep on rolling.” The Trojans are now 5-1 and have an opportunity to build some serious momentum. 📸: Icon Sportswire
