I mained Yoshi in every Super Smash Bros game at #Supernova this year! Yoshi is one of the weirdest characters in Smash Bros history and was simultaneously the most difficult and easiest challenge I've done so far. So how did I do with Yoshi in every game?

I mained Fox McCloud in every single Smash Bros title at #Supernova this year. Fox is often cited as one of the strongest characters in Super Smash Bros history, being a viable character in every single game. So I put that to the test this weekend and competed in every game.

To understand Yoshi in Smash it's important to go to the beginning. Yoshi in Smash 64 is an odd character. His Up-B does not give him a extra height. Instead his double jump goes really high and he has armor during it, something that he keeps for the entire series.

Funnily enough, even though 64 is the game I've played the least Yoshi made a lot of sense to me. I already know how to double jump cancel (more on this later) and moving with him felt surprisingly natural. The last tierlist put Yoshi at 5th but he's arguably top 3 now.

Yoshi has taken a while to rise in the meta given that he's a weird character. Double Jump Canceling (DJC) lets you interrupt your double jump with an aerial, stopping all upward momentum. This gives you crazy combos but if you're off-stage without a double jump you just die.

But how did I do competing in 64? The answer is pretty bad. I was given a very generous 66th seed but only managed to win 1 set out of 7 opponents placing 179th out of 214. I'm only 1 year older than Smash 64 and some people have been playing it my entire life.

That's ok though because the game I practiced for the most was Melee. By far. Yoshi in Melee has a long history starting off as one of the worst characters in the game until eventually @aMSaRedYoshi was finally able to win a Supermajor with the red dinosaur.

But Yoshi was considered a terrible character for such a long time for a good reason. Yoshi is incredibly difficult to learn in Melee. Unlike in 64 Yoshi is much more precise in Melee and most of the top tiers can delete your stock for a single mistake.

I've mained a lot of Smash characters over the years and none of them have challenged me like Melee Yoshi has. But the tantalizing thing about him in this game is that when things go right he feels really good. His defensive counterplay is weird but very powerful when done right.

But how did I do in the tournament? After a month of practicing primarily Melee Yoshi, bashing my head into the wall that is learning this character, I managed to get 289th out of 814 players! A round 1 DQ helped me do better than I should have but I did beat a Marth in losers.

Now for Brawl Yoshi. Oh dear. This character is truly awful. Brawl in an effort to make the game more simple took away Yoshi's greatest strength, that being his double jump cancel. Without it, Yoshi's offense was heavily neutered and Brawl would keep many of Yoshi's weaknesses.

That being said he's still not the worst character in Brawl. I got the chance to talk with @Brawlternative and he helped me understand that in the early meta Yoshi was a counterpick vs Meta Knight because he had a chain grab infinite. But that alone wasn't enough to save him.

I was nervous to compete as Yoshi in Brawl because of his flaws, but I could work with it. Out of 152 players and as the 126th seed I surprised myself and got 65th! A DQ admittedly did help me but I still won a set in losers. I never want to fight Brawl Olimar again.

Smash 4 is a game I'm quite fond of given that's where I originally started my competitive journey but I did not have that much experience with Yoshi. I got some help from my friend @TJLikesPuddles at the event and learned a few techniques such as jab 1 Up-Smash.

However, Smash 4 gave Yoshi the biggest buff he ever could have asked for. He can finally jump out of his shield. Before Yoshi would have to drop shield before he could do anything. Nair has always been one of Yoshi's best moves and now you can do it out of shield.

This buff was huge for Yoshi but he was still considered a low mid-tier. Many things about Yoshi still feel a little awkward in this game and his unique defensive traits weren't heavily valued in Smash 4. Given the right player though and Yoshi could put in the work.

Am I the player who can prove to the world that Yoshi can do it in Smash 4? Not even close. Out of 209 players my only win would be a DQ. I went game 3 with a Shulk main but when it got to last hit I got greedy and tried to Up-Smash a Smash Art Shulk. (it did not end well).

Finally, we have Super Smash Bros Ultimate a game in which Yoshi has seen a major resurgence. Thanks to incredible Japanese talent such as @yoshidora123 and @ssbmark7 Yoshi is now just barely ranked outside of the top 10.

Yoshi got a lot of meaningful buffs from Smash 4 to Ultimate but the biggest may just be the engine change. Smash 4 didn't have many characters that could combo you to death. Ultimate does which makes Yoshi's double jump armor more important. Yoshi's offense is also eggcellent.

Yoshi mains in Ultimate are referred to as glue eaters. This is because of how easy it is to play as Yoshi in this game. In Melee I practiced for 30 minutes every single day to try and become proficient with the character. In Ultimate? I played him for a week.

So how did I do? Out of 1,581 players I placed 769th placing my seed. I went 2-2 (this time with no DQ) and lost a very close set against a player who counterpicked Rosalina and Luma against me. (@Its_Sunfish you should have stayed Wolf). Yoshi mains are glue eaters confirmed.

The last two years I've done this challenge as Fox and Captain Falcon and they at least felt somewhat similar throughout the series. Yoshi on the other hand has gone from being one of the most difficult characters in the series to one of the easiest.

If you enjoyed this post you can also check out when I did it as Captain Falcon last year! Also be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel so you don't miss out on the longform video I'll be making on Yoshi. Thanks for reading and have an amazing Tuesday!
This weekend I went to #Supernova the largest tournament ever and played as Captain Falcon in EVERY single Super Smash Bros game. No one else is the face of Smash quite like Captain Falcon but throughout his appearances in each game he functions very differently.
