Jessica Vlasac, 42, faces a charge of aggravated child abuse resulting in death after deputies responded to her Lakeland home around 11:58 p.m. on Sept. 6 for an unresponsive infant. The baby was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Vlasac initially told deputies she fell asleep with the baby in bed and woke up to find him face down, cold, and unresponsive. She also made statements including, “I think I killed our son,” according to the arrest affidavit. An autopsy found three distinct impact injuries and bleeding on the brain, including an L-shaped mark on the baby’s forehead consistent with a square-shaped object. Detectives noticed Vlasac wearing a large square-shaped diamond ring. When officers seized the jewelry, she allegedly asked whether it was the object that killed the infant. Medical examiners later determined the injuries were consistent with the baby being struck with the ring. The child’s father told detectives Vlasac became violent when she drank. He said messages showed she bought alcoholic shots around noon on the day the baby died. Sheriff’s officials said Vlasac later sent the father multiple messages stating that she had killed the infant and that he was dead, then deleted several texts. The father said Vlasac called him days later and appeared “unusually normal” while discussing their son’s death. He also said she asked him not to show detectives their messages. Vlasac was arrested Sept. 10 and is being held without bond at the Polk County Jail.

On this day I remember how we as a country came together to mourn. We were not Democrats, Republicans, independents, we were Americans who saw the tragedy that unfolded in front of us and the lives lost and we were one Nation one people. We must find a way to get back to that unity and not let politics divide us. If you lost a loved one on 9/11 I don’t care what side of the isle you are on who you voted for what gender you ask to be recognized as, my heart aches for your loss and the pain you went through not having that person in your life over these 25 years. We are Americans and we are one nation, it’s time to start acting like it again!
