Geopolitics, strategic hypocrisy and unsolicited peace plans. Diplomacy without the diplomatic language.

Diplomacy is what happens in public. Power is what happens before the meeting. Welcome to The Undiplomatic Diplomat.

Maybe next year they’ll give the Chemistry prize to a Hamas bomb maker.
The Nobel committee chair says they have "great faith" in Navi Pillay's integrity, but whether the Hamas-Israel war can be called a genocide is for the ICJ to decide, not them. Then why give the Peace Prize to the person whose commission already decided it, with no authority to do so? This is the same Navi Pillay who: 🚩 Signed a 2020 statement calling on governments to "Sanction Israel," then was appointed a year later to chair the UN inquiry into Israel without disclosing it 🚩 Defended a fellow commissioner who said social media is "controlled largely by the Jewish lobby," calling him "deliberately misquoted." He later apologized for his antisemitism himself 🚩 Ran the 2009 Durban conference that Ahmadinejad opened with an antisemitic speech, after dismissing Jewish groups' warnings as a "lobbying campaign" 🚩 Criticized the US in 2014 for funding Iron Dome to protect Israeli civilians from rockets, with no mention of Hamas firing them They handed her the world's most famous honour two days after the October 7 anniversary and then said they're not taking a position on what she's known for. So what do they mean by "peace"?

🇧🇷 Flávio Bolsonaro finished the first round ahead of anti-Israel socialist far left Lula. Lula expected a first-round victory. Brazil had other plans. Now the presidential race heads to an October 25 runoff, and Brazil will make the final choice.

Saudi Arabia doesn’t really have an army. They bought hundreds of billions of dollars worth of weapons, but they’re so fat, well-fed, and lazy that they don’t actually have anyone who will fight. That’s why the Houthis in flip-flops are beating the hell out of them without any fear at all. The Pakistanis and the Turks aren’t exactly eager to fulfill the Mecca agreement.

There are few phrases in international affairs repeated with greater confidence or subjected to less scrutiny than 'illegal Israeli settlements'. It appears in UN resolutions, government statements, NGO reports and news bulletins as though it were an established fact. Add the words 'under international law' and apparently further discussion becomes unnecessary. The trouble is not just that this is political rhetoric masquerading as law, but that it is in fact contrary to real international law, properly applied. ✍️ Natasha Hausdorff Article | spectator.com/article/the-is…

Flags are political history compressed into a few colors. Denmark’s Dannebrog is generally regarded as the world’s oldest continuously used national flag. The Dutch tricolour traces its origins to the revolt against Spain. Britain’s Union Flag emerged from the political union of kingdoms. And then, in the early 19th century, the independence movements of Latin America produced an entirely new generation of national symbols. A flag is rarely just decoration. It is sovereignty made visible.

They were created in the middle of a war. In May 1982, Argentina assembled a new commando company from experienced special-operations personnel and sent it almost immediately to the Falklands/Malvinas. This was Compañía de Comandos 602🇦🇷. 🧵

In the final battles, 602 operated alongside the Compañía de Comandos 601 and Gendarmería’s Escuadrón Alacrán. As British forces closed on Stanley, Argentina concentrated its special-operations personnel wherever they might slow or disrupt the advance.

That is what makes Compañía de Comandos 602 remarkable. It was not an old regiment sent into a new war. It was a unit created because the war already existed. Assembled, deployed and blooded in combat within days. Some units are built over decades. 602 was forged in weeks.
