Nice sunny day at @UToledo's Lake Erie Center to do some sampling! These students are setting up an experiment (40, 300 gallon tanks!) to understand how salt pollution is affecting freshwater ecosystems around the Great Lakes. Scientific fun in the sun @UToledo_NSM!
"Obviously they can be a nuisance when you know they get caught up near cars and lamp-posts and windows and things like that and they kind of go 'crunch crunch crunch' under your feet," says @WDHintz. "But this phenomenon is critically important to the Lake Erie ecosystem."
A well-rounded ecosystem is supported by the bugs. An associate professor for the University of Toledo's Department of Environmental Science explains. wtol.com/article/news/local/…
In this week leading up to @UToledo graduation we are honoring our Spring 2024 Department Outstanding Graduating Students! Today we are recognizing Owen Schassberger for this achievement! Hear from Owen about his time at #UToledo: bit.ly/3QuiGbo@WDHintz#UToledo24

The main thing I need for my science is TIME. I value stuff that buys me more time to think, create, hypothesize, read, write, and do. Anything that eats up my work time, especially detracting from the above, is a waste.
I feel exactly the same - and I suspect this is true for the vast majority of academic scientists. Our 'productivity lifespan' is eroded by the cancerous growth of administrative bureaucracy.

ALT The model’s predictions for where road salt concentrations will stabilize in 461,567 lakes and reservoirs larger than 2.5 acres. Each point represents a lake or reservoir. Predictions assume that road density and salt application rate per unit of road remain constant at mean 2010-2015 levels.
