How 45 million cubic meters of debris shattered Sikkim? A new study published in @SciReports from @WIHG_DST, @csirngri reveals the science behind the 2023 Sikkim flood tragedy. They found the South Lhonak glacier retreated 100m in months, leaving unstable dead ice behind. When a massive landslide struck the lake, it triggered a surge that destroyed infrastructure and took 24 lives. Dr. Manish Mehta (Scientist, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun) presented a ground-based, long-term scientific perspective on glacier monitoring and associated hazards in the Himalayas. Drawing from field studies across multiple Himalayan regions, he highlighted that most glaciers are consistently losing mass, with significant reductions observed over the past decades. However, he noted that glacier behaviour varies based on factors like debris cover, which can slow surface retreat but still lead to substantial internal ice loss. He emphasized the importance of key indicators such as Equilibrium Line Altitude (ELA) and glacier response time, which help understand how glaciers are reacting to changing climate conditions. Observations show a clear upward shift in ELA, indicating accelerated warming and increased melting. His studies also revealed contrasting patterns where some glaciers show rapid frontal retreat, while others with heavy debris cover appear stable but are losing mass internally highlighting the complexity of glacier dynamics. A major concern he raised was the rapid formation and expansion of glacial lakes, increasing the risk of outburst floods. Citing past disasters, he explained how sudden lake breaches can trigger massive downstream destruction due to water, debris, and sediment flow. He further pointed out changing climate patterns, including rising temperatures, reduced snowfall, and a shift from solid to liquid precipitation, which are accelerating glacier melt and altering seasonal dynamics. His address reinforced that continuous field-based monitoring, combined with scientific analysis, is critical to understanding glacier behaviour and managing emerging risks in the Himalayan region. #GlacierConservation #ClimateChange #Himalayas #DisasterRisk #WaterSecurity
